I just got my permit from my local sheriff here in NC to buy a handgun and leaning heavy towards a Glock 17.  Is there only "one" version of it or should I be looking for a version 2 versus 1, etc...

Thanks,

If you're dead set on a G17, get one with night sights.

Pretty much just one model, function wise.

Some different frame colors. That's about it.

There are 3 generations of Glock 17.

Post this in the Glock forum, alot of knowledgeable folks over there.

Gen 1, 2, and 3, are all good pistols.  Mine's a Gen 2.

There was a parts upgrade around 89-90, I believe, but most of the old guns had it done.  Mine was manufactured in Feb of 90, and it already had the upgrade.

G17 is one of the fines fighting pistols ever made.  Got mine on me right now.

What exactly are you lookin' for, in a pistol?  The G17 is very versatile.

As mentioned above, there are three different generations of glocks.  If you want the ability to mount a weaponlight on a rail, then you'll want the Gen 3 (currently in production).

Personally, I prefer the 2nd gen version.  I just don't like the 3rd gen grip.  I do like the idea of the light rail though.

Can't you get lucky and find the Gen 2.5 that has the light rail and no finger grooves... wait... they have the finger grooves but no light rail.  Gar.  Close!  Either way, that wasn't in the G17.

If concealment is on the list of things you wish to do with this new handgun purchase, the G19 would probably be a better choice for you.

Aside from that, any G17 you find on your gun dealer's shelf is likely to be a 3rd gen right now, and they are GTG.

You will not be dissapointed.  Glock 17 with Night sights was my everyday concealed carry gun for a little over 2 years.  I still have it and it is still one of my favorite guns to take to the range.  Do not carry it now as I have to carry something else for my job.  If not I would still be carrying it.
