I own a glock 19 from way back when, (1988) the year I was born. It was purchased for me by my grandfather for me to recieve when I turned 18. Well I've had it now for quite some time and want to put a tactical light on it, but with no rails on the frame this just isn't possible. So my question is, can you buy just the frames somewhere? Or is there some modification I can do to my weapon?

P.S. I want to keep it as original as possible because it has great sentimental value to me.

Cruise the gun shows, Surefire used to make a light that went on the frames with no rails. They are just damn tough to find.

might just be a better idea to buy a 3rd gen 19 and put your grandfather's in a display case on your wall or something. thats just my opinion though. the surefire no-rail mounting light seems like it would be a good alternative though if you don't want to display the one your grandfather bought you

I might be wrong but I think that the frame is the gun.  Meaning that to replace the frame you would actually be buying a different pistol.  Much like you can't really replace the lower on an AR.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the frame is the technical "firearm" part of the gun (embedded serial number).

I agree with the "buy a new one, keep that one stock for sentimental reasons" idea.

Either that or go with the Surefire mount.  But come on, you know you just need another reason to buy a new gun like the rest of us.

Glock will swap the frame out for you for a 3rd gen frame, but then you won't have the "grandfather's gift" G19 anymore.

Take a couple of "Anti-Rambolista" pills and forget about the tactical light...bad idea anyhow, in my humble opinion.

Have you thanked your Grandpa yet? You should.
FWIW, He didn't give it to you because he wanted you to worship it... He wanted you to use it.

Buy a new pistol if you want a rail.

Don't do it.

keep your GF's gift as it is, if only b/c it has sentamental value for you

buy another new/used 3rd gen (glock w/ rail) G19

for the price of either an old school surefire light for non-railed glocks, or a harder to find non-railed glock rail add on, that already would pay 1/4 of another glock

Buy another Glock.

Now Grandpa's gift is a back-up gun/family heirloom.

When your choices are A) modify one gun, or B) buy a second gun, the answer is ALWAYS B.  Always.

+1 to that IMHO also.

Keep it as is and don't mess up an excellent heirloom.

Besides, I would avoid hanging various tacti"cool" lights and gadgets off the front of your gun just for the fact that they get in the way and can serve to cultivate tactical laxity like pointing your gun (and the light attached to it) to illuminate something that is not necessarily a threat.

Grandfather has passed, hence the sentimental value. I think I might  swap the lower... I am only 19, so purchasing a new weapon is tough, but I really do appreciate all of the suggestions.  If I can

Heed the others input, and mine - leave the pistol as it was given to you. Dont change a thing. Once the lower is swapped you wont have the same pistol anymore and it is an irreversible path, glock will destroy the original frame given to you by your grandfather and will replace it with a new frame and a modified serial number.

Your pistol will never again be what was purchased, held and eventually given to you when the time was right.

Best advice *my* grandfather ever gave *me* was "take your time to make things right for yourself, if you rush some things too fast and you will screw it up...you have the rest of your life to get things right for yourself"

I was told that when I was 15. I'm 36 now. That bit of wisdom has helped me and guided me more than you can imagine.

Good luck and dont rush a decision - a good used G19 with a rail is $3-400 and while that may seem like a lot right now, it wont be long before thats not a huge deal.

I wish I still had an older frame without finger grooves  Try shooting a 3rd generation Glock before you buy the newer frame. I'm not big on the lights either because most of the time they're not needed.

Thanks for all of the great advice, I'm going to leave it like it is and just purchase a new one later down the road.

Just buy a G17 and call it a day

If you are using it for a light, you aren't going to be concealing it anyway.  Then you get longer sight radius and more capacity.
