Any opinions on this weapon?  I am very close to buying one, but my decision is so far based on 3rd hand information.  This would not be a carry gun or even a nightstand gun, just something to shoot at the range and during competitions.  I am not a serious competitor, more of a fun-gunner.  I intend to mount an Optima Red Dot 2000 sight on it.

Does the 34 accept Glock 17/19 magazines?

Thanks for any info.

Sounds like a good gun for you for what you described.  The 34 will accept mags from the g17 (same as 34) and g18.

I own a G34 and absolutely love it. It is the perfect gun for your intended use.

or you COULD wait a month or two and get a brand new G17L if you so desire.

They are sweet weapons and perfect for your intended use.  The extended slide stop and mag release are nice extras as well.  I also find the longer sight radius to be pretty sweet for target acquisition.

I really like my G35,(I got it as a wedding present how cool is that) it is very fun to shoot, and the longer sight radius helps guys like me that arent the greatest shot. It has quickly become my favorite shooter edging out my trusty G22s.  I think you would really enjoy a G34, the practical/tactical is a very forgiving weapon.

edited to add: with a dot sight I think it would  dominate in competitions.

My first Glock was a 34 and I love it.  My IDPA times have dropped amazingly in the month I've been using it.  Enough that I'm in danger of being moved into Sharpshooter.  It fits the IDPA role very well.  Very easy to achieve speed and accuracy.

Things I don't like are the extended slide stop and mag release.  I've got big gorilla sized hands and I have a tendency to put pressure on the slide release so during matches the slide doesn't always lock back when it's empty.  That's an easy fix and I just need to get around to doing it.  In the mean time it cost me a first place last saturday (missed it by .63 seconds).  Also, the extended mag release...  On stages where the gun is laying on a table or in a box, etc., grabbing the gun vigorously can push the mag release and  pop the magazine out.  A consideration if it were a nightstand gun (I understand you said it wouldn't be).  Again, I just need to swap it for a stock version.

Actually, I have used it for Carry as well.  It's no bigger than the 1911 I used to use, and it's much lighter.  Not hard to hide on a 6'3" 250lb frame.  Of course, now a Glock 20 has taken over that role.  I'd say go for it.

Thanks guys, looks like I will be picking one up shortly then.

One question, what's the difference between the 34 and the above mentioned 17L?  Aside from the factory installed extended mag release and slide stop?

The 17L is longer.

IIRC the 34 is a half inch longer barrel than the 17 and the 17L is a full inch longer than the 17.  Not 100% on that...

And unless you like holsters with open bottoms, it is very difficult to find holsters for the 17L. I have had a 17L and a G35 and prefer the 34/35 to the 17L/24 for me. I will most likely get a G34 before the year is out...very nice pistol.

Great choice, but, if I could do it over I would have looked at the 35..(.40 cal).you can put a 34 barrel in addition to a .357 barrel into it and have three guns for the price of one. I carry my 34 in colder months or just when I want to give my 26 or 37 a rest.

9mm ammo is cheap and fun to shoot ...practice makes perfect.

I am also considering a Glock 34 for IDPA matches. I shoot a Sig P226 as a Sharpshooter now. I noticed that most of the expert and master class shooters in the SSP class use this pistol.

I love my 34.  It's quickly become my favorite handgun.  I shoot it more than any of my other pistols.  That's why it's also my primary home defense gun.  It's fun and cheap to shoot, so I shoot it more.  And more practice means more confidence.

ETA:  Forgot to mention, the one thing that sucks about the 34/35 are the stock plastic sights.  They're not very sturdy and the rear doesn't offer the best sight picture.  Many people replace them.

34 all the way.  I bought one a few weeks ago, and it is an awesome handgun. Accurate and reliable; I can't complain. It has also turned into one of my favorites in short order.

Not totally off topic, but what do you guys think of this as a carry gun?

I have one but have never carried it.  I'm not concerned about the size.  What concerns me is the big hole in the slide...  I get enough lint and crap in my 1911 even totally covered in a VM-II, how is it going to affect the 34?

I don't carry, but...

Unless your definition of "lint" includes small metal objects, I highly doubt it would cause any problems.

Actually I can't imagine anything (realistically) that could fall into the cutout and cause a stoppage.

Why don't you just get a full size Glock 17??   This is only a marginal diference in length and you can save about 50 bucks or more.

I use a G35 and I love it. I just picked up a 357 sig barrel recently and I can't wait to try it out

Actually, small metal objects are quite possible.  I work with aluminum and steel all day...

I really don't think it would be a problem.  Yeah, there's a potential issue with something getting in there and gumming up the works, but I see plenty of barrel on an M9, too.

I've carried my 35 in some very inhospitable environments and this issue has never come up.  So long as you hit it with the old green toothbrush every once in a while, you're good.

I've carried my G35 everday at work for the last 3 years without any problems.  Like Hal9k said, hit with a toothbrush now and again.  No problem.
