So current owners of such handguns, could you give me the pros and cons of each?  I'm submitting the paperwork for my CCW probably within the week here, and while I wait I might as well do some shopping for a new toy.  Open to other suggestions but I really want to stick with 45 since the only calibers I have are .357 mag (and sig), 40, and 45ACP.

Thanks for the input ladies and gents!

Only Glock I ever owned that was not reliable was a G36.
Our local department had enough problem with the G36 that they were disqualified as an off duty weapon.

Go with the XDS

While I have not carried the XDs, I do carry a XDm .45 compact daily.  I would recomend it to anyone.  I would think the XDs is even more reliable being single stack

I'll take it that you mean for ccw. I've gone from Glock to XD (subcompact) to Smith & Wesson M&P compact. Probably should have stopped with the XD.
Certainly the most accurate and fun to shoot for me. I know there are a lot of Glock fans but I had issues with mine, reliability as well as ergonomics. Find a range that rents guns and give each a try and decide which one you prefer.

I have had 2 Glock 36's and both were total junk. I now have been carrying an XDs for 5 months. I shoot it regularly and have had zero issues from 7 different types of ammo. The XDs IMO is the best concealed carry gun of all time.

I have a Glock 36 that I got on a trade.  I've only shot it a few times, but it's been totally reliable.  What kinds of problems were you guys having?

No XDs experience here but I've owned two G36s over the years and won't be buying a third.

The G36s I've owned were always 99% reliable which just isn't enough for me. A good friend and fellow firearms instructor owned one and had similar experience with his. I'm not sure why the G21 and G30 are so reliable and the G36 is not but it's fairly well documented if you research the net.

If you need a small reliable Glock consider the G26-27.

I've got a G30s Gen 4 on order and will post my results after I shoot the hell out of it.

This says it all. Any other time, I'd say Glock all day long.

Not with the G36

Either would be a good choice

I'm a Glock guy. Never owned a 36 but have fired one and know others who have owned them. Doesn't seem to have the best track record for reliability from what I've seen. Most get sold.

I do not like my XDs's very much. My 45 version rips my hand up, my 9mm version is much better but still feels strange in hand compared to my Shield. But both versions seem to be reliable and and they conceal very well.

I would go with the XDS

I guess I've been taking the reliability of Glock for granted. I owned a couple in the past (22, 23) and never had an issue. I'll probably swing towards the XDs then. I have a range nearby that has one for rent. I'll have a whack at it and post results. A gen 4 27 would also fit the bill but I'm trying to stay slim. Denver is a bunch of Nazis when it comes to guns.

I shot a g36 once, put 100 rounds through it without a hitch!

Not much range time with the XDs but I didn't care much for the .45 I shot. Seriously considering the G30s. If I get a hankering for a new compact .45, it would be between the G30s and the M&P45c

They  ( Glock 36's ) hate truncated HP or just plain truncated FMJ . Use the right ammo and they are flawless , least mine is.
Now as to answer the OP question I have a Glock 36  love it, as for  the XDS don't have one but they look good on paper . I have a strong
interest in getting one .

The net , must be true I read it on the net . Bon Jor

Glock 36 jam
Long time ago the may have but " that was then this is now "

I have shot  hundreds  if not thousands of rounds through mine and it is a fact that it has never JAMMED . I shoot Golden Sabre
type reloads all kinds of reloaded HP type rounds
Lawman Ammo ( which is truncated  FMJ and have no jams go figure  )
I don't shoot over 200 rounds at a time and clean it between range dates . I oil it with plain Hoppes gun oil .

Fair enough!  Hopefully I'll get a chance to try out the XDs this weekend, and then I'll have to look around for someone locally with a 36.

I don't own either, but I thought the G36 was the same size as a G19, with the XDs being significantly smaller.

                      G36                G19             XDs

Length        6.97                  7.36               6.3
Height         4.76                  4.99               4.4
Width           1.1                   1.18               0.9

Guess I was wrong, seems as though the G36 splits the difference.  Although the XDs is significantly slimmer, a very important dimension in a carry gun.  If that is not important to you, the G36 seems so close to the G19 that I would go with the G19 ( or G23) over the G36 for round count.  I am a Shield guy (same dimensions as the Xds), and have no experience with the G36 or the XDs so my opinion is just my 2 cents.

I cant say on the Glock...they never felt right for me,...I have a 3.8 compact XDM and XDS' both  in .45.
I've had no issues with grip safety...the XDS has a bit of recoil, certainly manageable.
I did put Talon rubber grip tape on the XDS , definitely improved grip...then another set for the XDM...no doubt, well worth the $20.00.
I haven't had a hic up with either.....all 230 grn ball or HP 230 hp , however your mileage may vary..

XDS. Not a fan of XDM or XD but the XDS is real nice. Has a nice trigger to it and recoil is minimal. Since it is a lot smaller than the G36 yet has the ability to hold more rounds, it's a no brainer.

Another vote for the XDs.  I have both the .45 and 9mm.  I CCW the .45.  It's the best CCW gun on the market, IMO.

I have the xds and I really like it. I need to put more rounds through it before I will carry it but in the first 100 rounds were flawless and the gun is very accurate. I don't  find the grip overly aggressive but if you do I have read good things about rubber talon grips. On a side note I have never shot a 36.

Glock 36 was my first handgun. It was a great choice for me. Couple thousand through mine with a good reliability record for me. My personal preference now is 9mm and I go with 26 and a 19. Honestly with a magazine inserted, the 36 isn't much smaller than a 19. I think you should consider a Glock 30S. That is a 30SF frame with a 36 slide. More capacity and can take full size glock 21 magazines.

From what I have read and heard from others I am sure you would be happy with the xds as well.

Love my xds. However I don't perceive much difference between it and my 26. So with double the rounds I find my 26 comes along more, and I'm a 10mm>45>9 type of guy.

+1.  Mine was very reliable.  I switched to the 19 or 26 due to more rounds.

I've got both.  My G36 has been a 100% reliable pistol and I've always been a big fan of it.  I'm also a fan of numerous other Glocks (just saying this to illustrate that I'm very fond of Glocks).

With that said, the XDS will be replacing all my other pistols as my new EDC simply because of it's size and (anticipated) function and reliability.  I love my G36 but the XDS is my upgrade.

The only PRO I can offer might be that due to the larger size of the G36, you may be able to fire it more accurately.  I find that the G36 has a very soft recoil.

My short ownership of the G36 was that it was the only POS Glock makes. Glock needs to stick with double stack, that's for sure. It is the bastard stepchild of Glock. I couldn't get through one mag with ANY ammo, and I absolutely do not limp wrist. They are definitely the most problematic pistol they make.

Go with the XD.
