Okay, so i want a glock that i can shoot at the range and carry for defense. I heard that a guy bought a g22 in .40 and a threaded 9mm barrel and now he can shoot surplus 9mm for the range and carry .40. Is this really possible? Where can I get a threaded barrel? Would you take this course of action? |
I've done it. You really don't need a "threaded barrel"(unless you have/want a suppressor) just a 9mm conversion barrel and G17(9mm) mags. You can also get a G31(357SIG barrel) and shoot 3 calibers in one gun. Lone Wolf has them. Item # LWD-229N

When you drop in a converstion barrel, does the extractor work properly? If it doesn't, then what is the jam rate? 1 in 1000, 1 in100, 1 in 10? I really want a 9mm convertion but I dont want to have to unjam it ever 20 shots because the extractor was not made for 9mm. Rose Mech |
Yes, "0" jams to date. I've put over 5k rds through mine in the last year. I talked with a former warrantee manager for Glock,Inc and he worked with the factory engineers when the 40s came out because the 40s were chipping the 9mm extractors. What they did was cut a 5degree angle in the 9mm extractor and put it in the 40 to accommodate the faster slide speed. |
You will need to change the ejector |
Brian - what issues would you see if you don't change the ejector? I've done a 9mm barsto drop-in without other mods & its worked fine so far (G23). Would you elaborate? Thanks... |
Let me first say that I am not a fan of the 40 to 9 conversion. If you're on a tight budget, I guess it's a viable option. I would rather put the money towards a good used 9mm Glock. If you notice, most barrel makers who sell 9mm barrels for 40's recommend you change the ejector. They also state the conversion "is for range use only". In other words, Dont bet your life on it. My reasoning for changing the ejector is 1. based on the recommendation from the barrel makers, and 2. My knowing that the 9mm and 40 ejectors are two different animals. Since the part is cheap enough, and easy enough to install, I dont think there is good enogh reason not to install it. I know there are many who dont and it works fine and that's great. I am a big believer in installing the correct part. Before you know it, you'll get comfortable with it, end up carrying it, and heaven forbid if you need it and there is a failure because of a mickey mouse 9mm conversion using a 40 cal ejector and extractor. |

I personally wouldn't change either the extractor or ejector, unless I experienced failures. However, I also wouldn't trust a conversion barrel with my life. Such conversions would only be a range toy for me. The appeal of the 9mm conversion barrel, obviously, is that one can make the conversion for about 1/4 the cost of a used Glock, and 9mm ammo is a lot cheaper than .40. KKM's making a 10mm conversion barrel for G21's. Guys using the barrel recommend using a G21 LCI extractor. Ejectors are the same. I'll probably pick up one of those KKM barrels in the not-too-distant future. |
| Gotcha - I use it for 9mm plinker option, with still getting the same trigger & ergo's at a significant cost savings from buying another pistol. I don't recall seeing a manufacturers notice with the conversion, but I've heard some rumors... Thanks for the feedback. |
