Just how good do these shoot and what would I gain over a G17 besides a longer barrel and sight radius ?

my G34 will group about 3 1/2" at 35yards with good 147grain loads (edge to edge).... my G17 a little bigger...I use mine for USPSA and 3 gun competition... the G34 points (indexes) from the holster better....the added sight radius (I shoot a .090" wide sight blade) helps with old eyes....

That sight radius is a helluva thing. You can still get your hits with a sloppy sight picture because of the longer sight radius.

This.

It's amazing how fast/sloppy I can get. In competition, as long as I can see my front sight, I'll hit -1 zone or better on an IDPA target.

I can also hit an 8" steel plate at 100 yards about half the time with mine.

To my feel the recoil impulse is a little flatter with the 34 as well. I like my 17 but there is a place for the 34 as well.

Do I want a Gen 3 or Gen 4 ?

I would with either an older (3+ years) Gen3 or a new Gen4

The real advantage of the Gen 4 is the mag catch and the smaller grip.

I have 19 Glocks (and have owned 5-6 others), and my gen 4 G34 is BY FAR my favorite.  Like was mentioned above, the sight radius is extremely forgiving.  The recoil is flat and smooth.  I also think it balances and "points" better than a 17, but that could be because I shoot it the most.

I'll add that it isn't my first choice for CCW, that would be the 19, but it's my choice for everything else. Well that or my G35.

Dang I just got a 22 a couple weeks ago.  Should I have got the 35 instead?

I love my 34 Gen4 that I panic bought.

The one thing that I don't get is why it kicks MORE than my 19 using the same ammo.

I'm not a physics Stephen hawking guy but doesn't a longer barrel have higher mussel velocity so more kick (but less flip)

I don't have a 34, but definitely find this to be true with my 17L.  It's so easy to shoot it well without even trying.

I own a G35 3rd and 4th gen

I don't think it is any more accurate, compared to a G17/22 as barrel length has little to do with accuracy but the longer slide seems
easier to get on target.

I notice that it flips more on the last rounds in the magazine from the balance of the pistol changing. The 19 has a short enough slide and barrel that the balance doesn't change enough to notice. Just my observation from emptying 33rd mags out of both. I had to slow down with the 34 because it was taking longer to come back on target after each shot.
