What parts should have upgrading on a G19 to get the most out of it as far as longevity and performance?

Now keep in mind that I'm not building a match pistol, I just want to minimize the potential malfunctions.

If you want to minimize potential malfunctions leave it the way Glock made it... I even like the factory sights, but that would be the only Glock related 'upgrade' I'd advise if you're so inclined.  Spend the money on ammo and training... upgrade you...

Those little items will help you learn malfunction clearance drills, beyond that they're junk...

I'd put a steel front night sight on it and be done with it.

Trijicons are a good investment... the OEM plastic sights suck. On my Glocks I also look at the slide release; as I shoot with a high thumb, I like to bend the slide release in a tad to reduce the chance of accidentally activating the latch with my strong thumb in recoil. I do the bent using a vice to squeeze it until it is close to (but not touching) the frame. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Thanks for the heads up.

I guess Glock "perfection" means perfection.

I'm mixing some more Glock-Aid as we speak.

New sights, extended slide release, and 3.5 connector.  Other then that everything else is great.

You can also got to a different barrel incase you want to shoot lead, 25 cent trigger job, and you deffiantley need a suppressor if you get a threaded barrel.

Nothing needs to be changed unless you have the factory non-night sights. Those are flimsy and should be replaced.

There are things you can do, but they are more like preferences than necessities.

I like metal sights, an extended mag release, no finger grooves, and the removal of material from under the trigger guard for a higher grip.

I repeat, none of the above are needs, they just tailor the glock more to my liking. Ammo is a much better investment.

Another vote for "leave it stock" EXCEPT for the sights - get steel sights on it and shoot the shit out of it.

Only part that needs periodic changing is the recoil spring assembly - every 5k rounds

Have fun,

i agree with leave it alone... except for the 26/27/33...

the guide rod on my 26 broke after 200 rounds and on my leo friends after 100 rounds.  I replaced it with a non-captive wolff spring set, good as new.

give it the 0.25c trigger job and leave the rest stock imo.

A steel front sight, or night sights if that floats your boat.

That's it.

I prefer the NY1 Trigger Spring, and it's stronger than the standard Trigger Spring, but that's personal preferrence.

Your pistol needs nothing more to "maximize" it's potential.  They're pretty well-made as they are from the factory.

As far as the pistol functioning, all I do is replace the stock spring and rod with a non capture type. Only because I have seen 1 fail. The glock is extremely reliable.

Night sights for sure. I use an aftermarket guide rod and Ghost Rocket connector.

Yeah, the plastic guide rod is probably the weakest link in the Glock.  They usually don't fail though.

Next is that trigger spring.  NY is less likely to break, but I hate that pull.

If longevity and reliability are your #1 concern then leave it stock. The only debatable exception to that might be to replace the factory plastic sights with steel sights.

That said, along with the sights, I also add the factory ext. slide release and the Vickers\TD ext. mag release to all of my Glocks. I feel those parts improve my ability to use the weapon without negatively affecting the pistols reliability or CCW-ability

Dark Star, I cant believe it....wish I read your post sooner!!! I just did a bunch of trigger work(25 cent, connector,  spring, etc)and put one of them bushings in for the guide rod, seemed to make sense as the recoil spring is the same on the 40 as it is the 9mm I wound up having feeding problems and was blaming it on a possible bad mag spring, then I read this..
"4. Please take our advice and do not purchase or use recoil buffer systems. The stock recoil spring performs perfectly - the gun does not maintain reliability if the recoil system is changed. Some of the most common problems that we see with these systems are a failure to feed or a failure to eject properly. In the most extreme cases, we have seen catastrophic failures related to recoil buffer systems."

guess that could be my problem???

Good choice.  My guess is that pistol will serve you well, for years.

While I'm not a Glock fan, per se, I do have two Glock 19's, and I feel they're pretty much good to go, for my purposes (ownership of two identical high capacity 9mm pistols to play with a bit, and put away for a rainy day).

Mine are a pair of the Austrian proof marked ones that went around recently, and so had a steel front sight, which was nicer than the plastic ones you normally see.  Nonetheless, I like a black rear sight, w/ a dot up front, especially a nice, shiny metallic bead.  To achieve this, I bought some Heinie Slant Pro sights, and handed them over to my buddy Shannon.  He widened the rear notches to .140" and drilled the fronts for 2mm bead inserts.  Then he KG'ed the sights, before installing the 2mm stainless steel pins I supplied into the fronts.  Wow!  These are nice sights, and they spiff up the image of my black plastic staple guns more than I thought they would.  Still, I would hardly call them necessary.

I thought I might play with the Zevtech Fulcrum trigger, but my pistols have broken in to a point that I feel I can cope with the OEM trigger.  Now I'm merely considering the addition of G34 slide stop levers and Vickers mag releases.  I think these will be a minor improvement, and still far from necessary.

Glock 19 is probably good to go, as-is, for most people, depending on what you want.

I also understand spending money on gun stuff, and screwing around with gun stuff, just for the hell of it.

Typically, I get the improved slide stop/slide release, and larger mag release.  I use factory sights and I compete with my Glock.  If you're really going to use your Glock at night then by all means get Trijicons, if not, then get some Novak sights.

I replaced the slide locks/releases (the little gizmos that you have to pull down to take the slide off) on my 17 and 30.  My 30 was a Glock factory rebuild and had Trigicon sights.  The only thing they're good for is locating the pistol in the dark.  If it's dark enough to require night sights I probably can't see the bad guy anyway.  The sights on my old 17 are the ones that came on it and they work.  If I spent a lot of time adjusting my sights I might get steel.

Meprolight sights  = Better target aquisition
Extended slide release = Better fit for my hand, I can maintain my grip while manipulating the control
Vickers extended mag release =  Better fit for my hand, I can maintain my grip while manipulating the control
TLR light = Nightstand duty (backedup by a Surefire G2)
Lots of GLOCK mags = Each mag has been thoroughly tested and is good to go.  I use my older non-drop free mags for range work and game play.  My CCW / nightstand mags are tested and remain loaded with my SD ammo.  I also have a stash G2G mags for replacement.
LOTS and LOTS of ammo = gotta practice.
Galco and Serpa carry rigs

I also use Gun Butter and Gun Butter Grease for lubrication.

It's just polishing all the bearing surfaces on the parts that interact when pulling the trigger.....................bearing surfaces on the fire control parts.

There are vids all over the net on doing this................alot of folks like it.

I just polish it all by shooting the heck out of the gun.  Works great, and is more fun.

Ive been shooting a glock 19 for 12 yrs now, I upgraded my recoil bar and spring, 3.5 trigger bar, and extended mag and slide release. I ve made these changes to 4 other glocks so far and its just makes the gun run a little better for me personally

Glockparts.com, LWD, Glockmeister, lots of companys have them.

You can go with an extended, or you can actually get a mag release for the G21/G20.  It will fit and run perfectly, and will be longer than the stock release on the G19, but a bit shorter than a true extended one, sort of in-between.  Just a thought.

What do you all think of the ghost trigger kits? I put one in my 21 and my accuracy improved over the original. Am I compromising any reliability with something like that?
8/25/2009 10:48:47 PM EDT

All of my Glocks (except the 26) have the following "additions."
10-8 Glock sights w/ Tritium front sight (the 26 has the Warren black back w/ tritium front, a little less grab and drag than th 10-8's for concealed carry)
Vickers/ TD mag release
Grip Plug
Surefire X300 on full and midsize
