I'm sure this has been asked before. I'm asking now because I wasnt current and new feedback.

Does anyone have hands on experience with the .22lr conversion kits for the GLOCK 17? I've been looking around for .22lr pistols, looking for something reliable, etc. Everywhere I go I get mixed reviews on the various popular pistols. The Walther, the Sig, etc.

I was thinking to myself, "Too bad there isn't a GLOCK in .22lr" and then I googled it and see that there is a conversion kit. I'm wondering what the reliability, accuracy, etc is.

Could this be the answer to my .22lr pistol question? Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Get an Advantage Arms .22lr conversion, from everything i have heard most really like them.  Plus they are the most reliable, fairly reasonably priced and extra magazines won't break the bank.

This would be an ideal way to learn proper trigger control for your self defense weapon.

Thanks for the input. Do you have any hands on experience?

I had one that I used on my Glock 20. It's a good reliable conversion. I put about 1000rds through it before I ended up selling the whole set up. There is one type of ammo not to use in it and I want to say it's the Federal bulk pack you can get at Walmart. All that does is jam it up. Use the ammo the factory recommends and you'll be fine.

No experience yet, just lots of positive reviews here and over at Glocktalk.

One of these days.

You mentioned that you sold the whole setup, I assume it wasn't because you didn't like it. My question is whether you would consider the conversion kit a good alternative, or better to a dedicated 22lr pistol?

PS. Thanks for all the help!

I have the Advantage Arms .22lr Glock conversions for both the G26/27 and the G19/23.

They both work great and I would consider them a must-have accessory for the Glock.

It is vastly more realistic than dry fire practice, while the costs of .22lr over 9/40/45 ammo is dramatic.

It is useful for your own practice AND it is useful for training newbie's in actual glock shooting / handling skills without any of the recoil.

As in all .22lr conversions, some .22lr high velocity ammo works better than others.

No .22lr ammo is perfect.

I have the Advantage Arms LE unit for the G-19. Simply superb. Two malfunctions in 800+ rounds so far, and surprisingly good accuracy.

Be sure to pick up several extra magazines. This thing is a hoot to shoot, and an excellent trainer/practice device.

Personally, I wouldn't buy so much as an Allen wrench from Jonathan Arthur Ciener. Too many tales of woe regarding his non-existent customer service floating around for my taste.

But the AA kit is solid value for the money. Just be sure to use high-velocity ammunition. Mine works with standard velocity, but it ain't supposed to...

I've had the Advantage Arms kit for my Glock 19 for about 5 years now. Have fired thousands of rounds of Remington Golden bulk pack through it. Other than a misfire now and then (ammo related) no problems. I use the .22 top end much more than the 9mm top end. Well worth the money.

I've got the LE model for the 17 and I love it.  As others have said it is great practice with the same trigger.  One thing to keep in mind is it will be really light.  With the Streamlight TLR-2 mounted, it ways about as much as the standard 17 without the Streamlight.  This is without magazine weights, of course.  Be sure to get the L.E. model, if you ever change the sights.  The Target model has the sight machined into the slide.  The only downside is 10 round capacity.  I haven't shot mine recently, but I am headed to the range this weekend.  I'll be sure to take it with so I can give a range report.  I use Minimags solely in mine.

-Tom

P.S.  Several members here have these babies suppressed by using thread adapters.  Waiting on mine to come in so I can send the paperwork.

I have the Advantage Arms LE model for my Glock 17. It's very well made and reliable with the recommended ammo.

No experience with the G17, only the G19.

My advise...  Do It!

Just an FYI,

I just called Advantage Arms to order a 17-22 Target. The Target model Glock Conversions have been permanently dropped from production.

So I ordered a 17-22 LE instead.

Theoretically, the lighter slide of the Target model should have made it less ammo sensitive. But Advantage Arms said it accounted for less than 4% of sales so they dropped it. Another case of a better mousetrap that got ignored to death.

Except the target model looks like shit and won't fit in some holsters, and the LE version has adjustable sights anyway.

The only reason I considered a target model was for the 3-dot sights, to duplicate what I have on the -19 and -21.

Ah well, looks like it'll be a LE model.

I have an AA G19 upper that is on it's way to Tornado-Technologies for threading for a .22lr suppressor.  I hope to have it back soon.

I wish I could recall the name of the fellow I bought mine from (at a gunshow). He had a half-dozen of the Target G17/22 models on his table.

I almost bought one for the wife's G26 at the same time; and wish now that I had. I'm REALLY kicking myself for not scarfing another 2-3 magazines; he had them for $20.

I still think, however, you should get the LE model, Tim.

Use the Unit #1 for serious paper-punching. The AA/Glock kit is just for blasting fun; or training.

My AA/G-19 kit and Marvel Unit #1 are about all I shoot these days. I'm going to order 10K of rimfire ammunition tomorrow; and another 10K on August 29 (pay day).

Twice now, I've farted around and put off ordering ammunition, ammo-related stuff, or reloading components, only to watch it go up in price a few days later. "They" say to look for a 25% price increase come September 1.

I believe them...

I already have a 17-22 LE inbound (they quoted 4-6 weeks) direct from AA. I'll probably order the Unit #1 after my next paycheck. I'll eventually get an AA 19-23 and 26-27 because I've got Glocks in all 3 lengths.

But I'll still pick up AA Target models in both lengths if I get a chance.

What ammo does each of your conversions prefer for best accuracy and functioning?

Please give me the name and phone number for the best source for .22 ammo (and 9mm too), in case I can't access their web site from here.

What ammo are you guys putting through your AA-LE kits?

Tim,

I didn't try that many different brands in the AA/G-19 kit; when the Mini-Mags worked so well, and showed acceptable accuracy, I quit "testing".

CCI Mini-Mag 40gr solids, plated bullet. Midway has 'em; dunno if that's the "best" price, but its a reasonable price. And Midway's service is exemplary. They do hit you on shipping more than most, but the hassle-free return policy is worth it. No ammo returns, though; so you may want to shop around.

In the Marvel, CCI Green Tag seems to be the best balance of an accurate, affordable cartridge. I have no doubt that the thing will hold tighter groups with some of the exotic stuff, like Eley. But I'm simply not paying those prices.

The problem with buying for the Marvel is this; the thing will indeed show you what it likes and doesn't like. The AA kit doesn't have near the inherent accuracy, and will suffice with anything that reliably functions it. But the Unit #1 is a true target-grade device that needs to be fed carefully to maximize its accuracy potential.

I tried eight different types of .22 in mine; it did best with CCI Standard Velocity, CCI Pistol Match, and CCI Green Tag. So I ordered a thousand rounds of CCI Pistol Match.

Guess what? The big order is a different lot number from the box I purchased at a local store, and doesn't shoot worth a shit; in MY unit. And THAT is the danger of ordering in quantity without testing that particular lot number first.

There's no way around this; .22 are simply too finicky on what they like and don't like. But I'm about to roll the dice again and buy a quantity of Green Tag. A pal is going to buy my Pistol Match, since it shoots well in his Ruger.

Good luck...

.
