G17, G17L, G22, G24, G31, G34, G35, G37 all share the same size frame.  You should be able to use any of these slides on a G17 frame, provided it is one of the reinforced ones.  Even some of the 3rd gen's were not reinforced, if I am not mistaken.  But it has been a few years since they were beefed up.  So as long as it is a fairly current G17, you shouldn't have any problems.  You might also have to change the ejector between the different calibers.

It would actually be cheaper to buy what you know is a reinforced gun.  Like a 357SIG, and buy conversion barrels for the one slide.  Otherwise, you are just wasting money on several slides, which you have to hunt down and buy anyway.  Nobody sells new slide assemblies.

No.  Just because a G17 has three pins does not mean you can shoot 357SIG through it.  Even some of the early three pin G17 frames were not reinforced.

Then there's the whole ejector issue...

Glock started the 3 pin G17 in '02 to help standardized production by using the G31 receiver in all the 9mm, 40 and 357SIG full size Glocks.
