I was looking at an HK today and the guy said it was double action only. I was reading about them on the HK website and was wondering if the firing mode can be changed without extra parts and if I can do it, or does it require new parts? Below is from the website.

The modular design of the USP's internal components allows the control lever function to be switched from the left to the right side of the pistol for left-handed shooters. The USP can also be converted from one type of trigger firing mode to another. This includes combination double-action and single-action (DA/SA) modes and double action only (DAO) modes.

It depends on the dent plate. If you change it, it voids the warranty.

Don't worry about voiding the warranty.  People worry too freaking much.  You can replace the detent plate and add the control lever and HK is not going to say crap unless you drive it in with a 5 pound sledge hammer.  In the Expert they include two hammers AND instructions for changing them out.  Does that void the warranty?  I don't think so.
If you change it out how is HK to know if you did it or a Certified HK Armorer did it unless you are stupid enough to tell them?  "Dear HK, my recoil spring broke and I am returning it for possible warranty repair.  By the way, I voided my warranty by changing out the detent plate and control lever."
If anyone is that stupid they deserve to be charged for the repair.  A monkey with 10 thumbs can change out those parts so don't sweat it.  Remember, shooting reloads voids the warranty too.  Big freaking deal.  IF you ever need warranty service HK is going to fix it unless you have really mucked things up and it is obvious, which you would be hard pressed to do by simply changing out the detent plate and putting in a control lever.  HK does not keep a world wide data base with all its certified armorers where they put in every little modification made to every pistol and HK is not going to check your serial number to see why it differs in configuration from what it shipped with.  Time for a reality check.

To go from DAO to let's say V1, DA/SA safe decock, you will need the detent plate, roughly $10, and the control lever, roughly $65.  You can get both from Cal's.  And if you would rather not do the swap yourself, Cal's will do it and you won't loose sleep at night for possibly voiding your warranty or worry that the HK Warranty police will show up at your door.
By the way, you can go here for the directions to do it yourself, complete with obligatory "voiding warranty" statement.

Darn BigBore, I was just trying to point something out.

I did not mean to make it sound like I was coming down on you in particular and if it came across that I apologize (and I do admit that it did read that way, sorry).  I just wanted to make sure that he did not spend a lot of money having someone do this conversion for him when most likely he could do it himself.  I think Cal's charges $25 for the conversion, but good God almighty, the shipping to him and back, and the same if HK did it would put the price of the conversion almost to $200 including parts.  I have had people e-mail me where they were genuinely concerned about voiding the warranty if they did this or that and most of the time it would be stuff that HK would have no way of knowing if it were done by an armorer or not, like replacing a hammer spring, trigger spring...
Now, doing a trigger job or shortening the reset on the trigger, oh yes, HK would notice that in a flash and might deny warranty service even if not related to the repair/conversion.
I have been flamed for saying don't worry about the warranty when shooting reloads but if one does a little research on HKPRO, it doesn't matter squat if you shoot reloads or not, HK will not honor ANY warranty claim if it involves ammo problems such as a KB.  If the problem was caused by a reload, it is your problem.  If it was caused by factory loads, guess what, they still dump it in your lap say you need to take the repair up with the ammo maker as it was THEIR fault, not HK's.  How's that for CS!
A really big area of concern is using a non-approved can such as CCFs.  With CCF for instance, the voiding of HK's warranty is a non-issue.  Let's say you use one of Larry's cans and a problem develops.  You send your pistol to HK and they look at it.  They know the types of problem caused by bad cans and what is unrelated, so your Tac has a problem unrelated to a can so HK is going to fix it and not bother inquiring about what can you used.  But, and this has never happened to my knowledge but let's say it did, if HK determined the damage was caused by a can, and asked and they found you used one of Larry's "non approved" cans then they might deny the claim.  So what?  Larry's cans are backed by a full replacement of the gun if HK determines the damage was caused by the use of his can (which until he and B&T parted ways WERE covered under HK's warranty and his cans are exactly the same as they were when they were fully blessed by HK) and so far as I know Larry has never replaced or repaired a gun yet.
HK is not as heavy handed as many think when it comes to the warranty issue (remember most warranty statements are CYA things required by lawyers).  On some things like ammo, yes, but on little things like having done a detailed strip or variant change and then a problem developes completely unrelated to having done them, HK couldn't care less.

I looked at changing to varient three.  How long does it take for doing it for the first time with proper tools?  I noticed the link you posted for the change over.  Is their any tricks to making installing it easier?
