Please recomend me a hand cannon.  The main purpose is for shits and giggle ( and maybe an occasional hunt).  Also for those times that I want to piss off my libertard cousins and have a "just because" attitutde.

So far, I'm considering the .50AE Desert Eagle or a revolver in .500 S&W.

Taking the availabity and price of ammo into consideration, which hand cannon would you recommend?

.44Mag, more affordable, easier to locate ammo

S&W 460XVR 8 3/8" –– almost as powerful as S&W 500, but can also shoot .454 Casull and .45 Colt.  But the S&W 500 8 3/8" may be the original & best.

Ruger SRH in .454 Casull Alaskan. Yeah the 500 and 460 may have more power but they're in a big package that is ported. the Ruger, not so much. As a friend tells me after firing full house loads, "I'ts like shaking God's hand".

S&W500.  Muzzle energies up to 3000 ft-lbs.  Bullet weights up to 700 grains.  Doubletap and Cabelas have hot ammo for under $2 a round.

If you really want to have some fun, get a short-barreled gun - 4" or 2" snubbie.

video - 4" w/ 700-grain bullet

600 Nitro Express of course

900 grain bullet @ 1950 fps and a muzzle energy of over 3.5 TONS............. oh yaaaa

Neither.  Save your money and buy a real gun.

Shit, even a .44mag is a way better choice.

Well since this is just going to be a fun gun purchase I'd pick the one that fits you the best and that you think is cool. Personally I'd go with the Desert Eagle since I think that it's cool.

I agree as I have had a .50 AE Desert Eagle for many years and I also have a ..44 magnum Ruger Rehawk. The DE 50 gets the most attention at any range if that means anything, and I sure as hell would NOT want to get hit anywhere on my body with that 50 magnum. Good luck.

Not even on a part that your body has two of? Like an eyeball? Or a tonsil? How about a lung?

The balls? AKA the Robocop shot.

to the OP:

I like the idea of the .454 Casull with the ability to shoot .45 LC as well. I ran into a Puma lever action at Gander Mountain yesterday in 454 Casull.

Freedom Arms 83 in .454 Casull.  That is one beautiful pistol, and it most definitely satisfies your hand cannon requirements.

I wanted one of these for years, then I finally shot one with some full power 320 grain Corbon ammo and I decided that early-onset arthritis just wasn't worth it.

Shoot the light 45 Colt in it to show your friends how tame it is and then load up some hot rounds for them to shoot!

Disclaimer....  tell them to watch out for their thumbs!!!!!

Thats exactly what I'm aiming for.  I want to shake the hand of god.....once in a while, but not all the time.  Something to bring me back to my humble status.

Still leaning on the .50 DE.  Hopefully I'll be able to do something about it in the next month or so.

So far the only handgun I didnt like shooting a box of shells thru is a 45-70.  A S&W 500 makes you sit up and take notice, a 460 is impressive., a 308 is a piece of cake (although noisy)... I love 44s, but the 45-70 was like slamming my hand in the truck door.

I'd have to concur. Part of it is "shits and giggles", but the .460 has a practical side too as mentioned above. I think that trumps the .500S&W. I "settled" on a .44, and wish I had at least stepped up to a .454 since the .44mag isn't quite as impressive anymore...

More versatility with the standard AR reciever (which the .50Beowulf uses) than with the .308 AR reciever.
You can caliber convert easier by just swaping uppers/mags.

Nadda, but you can try the ballistic experiment my friend, that is if you would survive from it, which I doubt that would happen, but I could stand corrected. Largest caliber I have fired thousands of times is 120mm, and I was curious what caliber you have shot the most times?

Edit- Pg 2 ownage on post 50.

I really want to do a 460 rowland conversion with my 1911. It lets you get 44mag power with a 1911 platform. Looks really awesome to me. The only issue is that you really need to be set up for reloading if you want to make it economical. So whenever that happens for me is when the 460 rowland conversion happens. The package come from clarks customs for about 280 and all you do is basically swap out your old barrel for a new one with compensator and change the spring. Here are a few images I stole from this article: 460 rowland article
You get almost 1500fps out of a 200 grain bullet

Here is one with the 460 cartridge next to the 45acp (460 on right)
