Does anyone know when H&K went from the grey box to the new black box?

sometime between 2002 and 2005. I know, not much help, but those are the dates I purchased Hk's

During 2001 (AB date code).  Some AB pistols were shipped in the gray boxes, some in the black, and some during the transition were shipped in the generic Gun Guard cases.  The change was made because HK started shipping pistols with two finger extended magazines and they would not fit in the gray cases.  That is not to say that some pistols were not shipped in gray cases after 01 (I know for a fact that some AC pistols in .45 and 9mm were shipped out in gray cases) but in general the change occurred during that year.

lol yeah, the case issue actually clued me in to the fact my SS fullsize while new, was really really old (1997 bought in 2003, i think).

oh well, it shoots like a dream, and it was my first hk.

Even better is if you look at the two letter manufactured date code.

the thought never occured to me before to look up the date code.  but, that's how i found out it was old.
