I have a S&W 629 V-Comp .44 magnum revolver that I put a Trijicon RMR on.  It's mounted with the Trijicon mount designed specifically for mounting the RMR to a S&W N frame.  It's really, really nice to shoot using the red dot but I cannot get the dot close to where the gun shoots within the 15 yards or less that I normally am limited to for shooting.  It shoots 5-6" high within that range when the RMR is bottomed out.  Is it just mechanical offset and unavoidable or should it be able to shoot closer to point of aim at these distances?

If it's just offset and unavoidable, at what distance should I zero the RMR to achieve point of aim shots?

Sorry if I'm not describing this very well, I'm new to optics on handguns.

This is the gun I'm referring to.

I would try putting a shim under the sight or mount.  A slice of Coke can should do the trick.

Aluminum can shims often work. If not most hobby stores sell small strips of brass (like 8" x 1") in varying thicknesses. I have had a few last for years to shim scopes. It takes a long time to go through 8" making shims.

If that gun is going to go through life shooting 15 yards you might as well make it shoot point-of-aim point-of-impact. When you do this shim project remember to center the optic adjustment.

Or adjust the optic to the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 then find shim stock so you can  re-zero for longer shots in future.

So the way it shoots is normal?  I'm only shooting short distances because that's what I'm limited to at the moment.  What distance would be considered "normal" zero for a .44 magnum revolver? I had never considered using a shim, I'll explore that option.  I would like to be able to shoot point of aim inside 30 yards, the gun will primarily be used for target shooting and as a "trail" gun/hog hunting gun.  I have no experience shooting targets or hunting at 50 yards plus with a handgun so any information is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
