Hey Guys, I have a stainless steel bobtail. I am thinking of having it coated. Which way would you guys lean? Hard Chrome? or Permacote/Tactikote? Thanks. |
Melonite could be best described as a "hard coat annodize for steel" It permeates the material while also adding to the surface. It has a rockwell over 70 and is my new favorite finish. I think my next one for me will be a Satin Hard Chrome bottom with a Melonite top end. I have a few in the mix that I call "Back Burner Guns" - guns that are for myself, but paying customers come first. The only disadvantage on Melonite or Chrome is if you have an uber tight frame and slide fit, it may need to be re-fit. 99% of the time, some simple lapping is all it takes to correct this. I haven't seen so far, any problems with pin holes and key cuts being filled in and causing problems. Not to say this can't happen, but so far I've been lucky. |
Bob, If you've gotta 'lap in' a frame slide fit after it's been sent to chrome or DLP, or any other finish for that matter, does the 'lapping' remove said finish? Do you, instead, pinch the frame or spread the slide? |
