Hello all, Im looking to get a .22 auto, seeing as how it's pretty much the only cartridge I can afford being a college student.

I am trying to decide between:

Ruger Mk3 SS 5.5 Bull Barrel

or

Browning Buck Mark Camper SS

On one hand many people have said the Browning is a better gun, however my grandfather and godfather both have a mark 3, so I have about 20 magazines I can use if needed.  Also I do not know of them ever having any issues with theirs.

It should be obvious but this will be purely a range gun, possibly doing some duty hiking around state game lands.

Also money isn't really a issue since I have some cash saved up.  I like the looks of the Ruger better, and need them in SS because of corrosion resistance.

So all yinz please give your input.  Thanks in advance.

welcome.

Since you have relatives with the same platform and many extra mags, i dont see why you would choose the browning.   since you also like the looks of the ruger too.   extra ruger mags are 10+ ish buck or more.   you could get more ammo with that savings.

also, fyi,  Stainless steel is "stain" less, not "rust" less.

I have had a Ruger MkII for about 10 years i guess.  the thing has never given me a bit of trouble and is very accurate (target model).  My dad ran over it with a truck once (accident of course)  and all that happened was loosened the front sight.  Great gun.

The buckmark is a fine little pistol but im a fan of the Ruger. These things are built like a tank and a great little .22. Either one will be fine but im just partial to the Ruger.

The 5 1/2" stainless MK III is a good place to start. Lock it away in the dark and watch it multiply.

The Ruger with a bull barrel will be heavey...To much to carry up a hill.

I like the Bull Barrel Ruger's. Super reliable and very accurate. In the rare event you need service, Ruger's CS is among the best.

They are both fine pistols, period. Either will give you great service.

I have a Ruger 22/45 which I got back when they first came out. Its a fine pistol that works as well now as it did all those years ago. Tons of aftermarket parts out there, triggers, barrels, sights, you name it. I also have a Beretta which is an OK pistol...not as good a shooter as the Ruger and not much available for it. Then I have a S & W 22A which is a real sleeper. Not much after market availible for it but a FINE gun in stock form.  I would love to get a Buckmark as they are praised by those who own them, maybe someday I will find one I like at a decent price.

In short, lots of good choices and you have two very goods ones to pick from. Can't go wrong with either.

Both are nice pistols, so it really comes down to personal taste. One thing I was surprised about was the number of Buck Mark models (23!) available. Take a look here. Personally, I went with the Micro stainless URX. Nice gun!
