I'm looking at an XD45, Glock 21 sf or gen 4,  or another 1911?

It will be a range and woods gun.

Well, if I have to pick one of the three, perhaps the G21SF.

If it were me, I'd also consider a German Sig P220, HK45 or FNP45 USG.

If cost isn't a factor and hazards in woods is four legged than a decent 1911. Otherwise, the XD or Glock depending on your preference of grip shape and feelings on grip safety. There is a lot more options of XD configurations, like barrel or grip length, than Glock configurations.

Option 1.) XD has high bore axis with a steel sleeve magazines. Been there and I like having feeling in my fingers.

Option 2.) Glock, yawn. Mild recoil for .45acp and caveman proofed.

Option 3.) 1911, well there are no substitutions. 1911s sell themselves unless you're a caveman. If that's the case see option # 2.;)

In your list I like the Glock 21 Gen 4. I recenty purchased a Sig P220 and love it.

I have owned both an XD45 and an FNP45 USG.  I love the FNP, it is a little big but you can't argue with 15 +1. I sold the XD, turns out that I don't like grip safeties.

Hmm all good suggestions.

I'm considering a P220 or a G21sf or Gen 4 right now.

How's recoil in either gun compared to a 1911? I've fired quite a few .45's, but never a Glock or P220.

XD45, reliable shoots great and will take a lot of abuse while doing it.

Smooth.

Probably Glock's most accurate gun too.

I've owned the XD45 and currently own the M&P .45 and FNP 45.

I didn't have a hell of a lot of ammo through the XD, maybe 2000 rounds at most, but it never gave me any problems.   It served on nightstand duty for several years.   The M&P is more compact and feels like it, with only a 10+1 round capacity.  It's on the nightstand at the moment, and no problems out of it so far, either.   The FNP feels huge for what it is, with a large, ungainly slide mated to a rather aggressively textured grip.   It seems as if it'd work well for an hiking gun, but is too large for me to comfortably carry it in a CCW role.    I have under 500 rounds through the FNP but it hasn't failed yet.

Wow that FN looks to be a biggun'. Do you know how it compares size wise to a G21? Good write up, thank you. I fired a couple M and P's as I liked the trigger pull and contour of the grip, but came away unhappy, I didn't like the feeling of the trigger reset.
