I have never had a revolver until now. I picked up a S&W 64 from JG Sales. It looks like there are a lot of the "HKS" speed loaders around. It says in the adds that they release the bullets with a "twist". It seems like a long time ago I saw a speed loader that released the bullets by pushing on the knob instead of twisting. It seems like this would be faster.
Anyone know of someone who makes a "push" type speed loader for the the 64? Any reason to go with the "twist" type? Thanks in advance. |

Safariland speedloaders, push the body of the loader towards the cylinder to release the bullets for loading.
I prefer the Safariland, but they have a learning curve with loading the bullets into the loaders. You have to press them slightly into the loader with the palm of your hand as you twist the locking knob to retain the rounds. Its what I was issued way back when and I like them. The HKS loaders are also good. You twist the loading knob to drop the rounds into the cylinder. A bit easier to learn. Good luck. |
| definitely prefer the safariland's they are a bit more difficult to load but release just by pushing the body (not the center knob) into the cylinder. Make sure you leard to reload a revolver properly- hard to describe but easy to demonstrate. with gun in right hand push cylinder latch forward and push cylinder out to the left by bringing your left hand around the cylinder. Then switch hands to the left to push the ejector rod. Then hold cylinder by putting hand thru hole in frame where cylinder goes from the right side and grabbing cylinder to stop rotatoion |

I have Safariland Comp 2 and Comp3, HKS, 3D Inc., Dade Screw Machine, Nikki, and what not speedloaders. HKS are pretty solid and last long, they are easy to operate and get faster with practice.
The Safariland comp 3 models are the fastest, though, and loading them from a loading block is quite easy. |

If your only going to have one caliber/gun then you might what to consider the Safariland models mentioned. I however like and stick to the HKS type for the sole purpose that they have several different sizes and calibers so operation is the same. ie. 6 shot for my 29 .44 Mag, 6 shot 57 .41 Mag, 6 shot 10 .38/.357 Mag, 6 shot 51 .22 Mag, 5 shot 36 .38 SPL and 5 shot CA .44 SPL.
