I thought about the XDS but I dont shoot handguns often so I think the recoil will be more than I want to deal with. I do like the thin single stack design though. I was also able to find a place online with new 9mm subcompacts for $439 plus $10 shipping. Not much more than used ones. And 9mm is pretty cheap at just under $10 a box for me. And with the ammo being cheaped Im more likely to practice with it.
Primary use will be as a EDC piece. Kinda leaning towards the 9mm. Just wish it was a thin single stack like the .45 is. Thoughts? |

if you got a .40 you could get a conversion barrel and shoot 9mm all day long but would have a serious firepower weapon as well. something to consider though, i would advise against carrying a gun w/a conversion barrel.
i don't see SA coming out w/a single stack 9mm. they would have to compete w/kahr. good luck. |

I'd strongly recommend the 9mm sub-compact. The difference in width is very small, only about 1/4" (1.25" wide for the sc, compared to 1" for the xds).
Between these two, you're getting 13+1 from the sc (with a 16rd with grip extension spare), compared to 5+1 with the xds. For a small increase in width, you're gaining quite a bit of firepower. 9mm is also certainly cheaper to practice with. As I'm sure you've probably visited the ammo forum and seen the "Best Choices for Self-Defense Ammo" tacked post, there is very little difference between 9 and 45. To me, having over double the capacity is worth the extra 1/4" in width. You should go to nearby range that rents handguns and see if they have a subcompact (they likely won't have an XDS yet) for you to play with. If you can't find anything, post up in your hometown forum and see if anyone close to you is willing to let you shoot theirs. |
