One of our family friend's house burnt on Wednesday. The fire department got her late husbands guns out with only smoke and water damage. They were on the oppisite end of the house from the fire. I am cleanig the guns for her and trying to put a value on them. She knows nothing about firearms. The Colt picture below did not recieve any damage as it happened to be in a gun rug. Here is what I kknow about it:

Chambered in .38 Special
Serial No. puts manufacter in 1957
Frame is case hardened and in good shape
Bluing is about 85 to 90 percent
Stag grips seem to be original to the gun, but may not be

What value should I give her on this? I don't want her to sell it to someone and not get the true worth.

Thanks for any help you can give. Mods, if this needs to be moved elsewhere just let me know.

Grips not likely original and 38 special was not a desirable caliber , this has changed somewhat with cowboy action shooters looking for light recoiling guns. In the pictured condition I would say a 13-1600 dollar gun

I thought the 38 was an oddball. I found during some more research it was only made from 1956 to 1964. I have been looking at auction sites, but could not find any sold prices. Just reserve prices set at 2000 to 2500. Thanks for the help.

Grips look like Jay Scotts which would be very correct for the time period.

I'd say $600 - $700 but you may want to check here:  http://www.coltforum.com/forums/forum.php

I'm no Colt expert, but I think it would bring $1500+ in my neck of the woods. Colts are and have been stupid pricey, but collectors and action shooters have deep pockets...............
