I'm turning into a collector freak and my handgun collection is small and kinda plain. I would like some help finding the next purchase.
Here's what I have currently: Ruger Mark III .22 Ruger Blackhawk .357 Mag S&W Sigma 9mm Springfield XD9 Service Glock 17 Glock 19 - 2 of these Springfield XD45 Service So, as you can see, they're all pretty much poly guns and I'm looking to get something with a little more substance, a little nicer and maybe with a little history. Caliber is not a huge deal specifically but with the amt of 9mm's I have, a .45 might not be bad although I'm not really a huge .45 kind of guy, I like my 9s. I'm kind of leaning towards maybe a Beretta M9 or maybe some sort of 1911 but I'm not all that familiar with handguns like some of you all are. Here's the hard part, my budget is around $750 to $800 and definitely not over $900, but I'm thinking of trading in / giving up the Sigma in this instance, not that it's worth much. So, I'm not sure what I can get in this range and really, used doesn't bother me. I was going to scour some local shops to see what used they had to offer and see if something pops out at me. But who knows more about guns than the peeps here. |

Oh yea, let me add this tidbit. My grandfather fought in WWII, Korea. Was part of the special marine team in WWII that were brought into the islands first for some recon and were subject to heavy hand to hand fighting. He was a true badass. Before he passed away from cancer, he gave my dad his old Colt .45 that he used throughout his WWII service. My brother was totally insane about this gun so my dad gave it to him for a college grad present. Come to find out years later when asking about it, he no longer has it. Turns out he pawned it during a spell when he was having some real money troubles.... F'ing a$$hole, I could have absolutely throttled his ass... to this day, the thought just makes me want to puke. I can remember going out to our hunting camp and my grandfather pulling it out for old times and popping some hogs or beer cans, and that smile he had when he talked about those 'old days'... He had been shot like 8 or 9 times and never a problem, got through it w/o a hitch.
I think this is why I never went to the 1911 model guns, because they always remind me of that gun, my grandfather and all... they just don't add in my mind, just another gun. Edited. |

Found a place not far from me, Mcbride's Guns in Austin, Tx, which is where I'll be on Friday. They have some decent selections online and I may call to see what they have in stock. That SA Mil-Spec looks like a very nice gun. Spent the last hour searching and googling it and sounds like a great value for dollar pistol.
Couple questions I have: 1) Are the extra features gained on the SA Loaded version worth the added cost over a Mil-Spec? Seems some don't like the grip-safety on the Mil-Spec. 2) Is there any reason to get a Kimber Custom II over the SA Loaded? Obviously, price-wise, the Mil-Spec is probably the way to go for a first time 1911er. Being a person that likes 9mm also, would there be any reason not to get a Beretta M9A1 over the 1911? I realize they're totally different guns, styles, calibers but these two will probably be my next two gun purchases, just not sure in what order. Seeing as I have a few 9mm and only 1 .45, I'll probably do the .45 first. |

For your first 1911, get a 45.
I have a STI Lawman and it is a superb firearm to SA and any others in its price range. Wish you could gather a couple hundred more bucks, you could get a trojan or Lawman and have some real quality in your hands. In your range, i would look at the STI Spartan. People absolutely love the Spartan for 6-700. happy hunting! |

Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman
Everyone should own one. |

You won't be disappointed. The STI and SVI pistols are the most used in competition guns and STI is made right in Texas!
The Lawman is a forged frame and is an amazing fit for me. Smooth, great trigger, no sharp edges, hand fitting quality that simply can't be matched by the larger companies such as SA or Colt. SA and Colt make great pistols but i love the attention to detail that my STI was given when it was put together. I have never fired a TRP but have talked to a few friends who have both and choose the STI. |
| HK USP 45 at SAXET goes for $715 I believe last time I saw, NIB of course, I'm kinda debating on which one to get myself. Both fit my hand well with the nod going to the HK45's newer design, HK45-10+1 rounds, USP 12+1 rounds, both can have threaded barrels, HK45 does not need an adapter for weapon mounted lights/lasers, HK45 is about $100-$150 more depending on where you go. Both can have Insight's LAM I believe. |

I'd probably sell the XD45 also and get 2 1911, probably a fullsize and compact/sub-compact, both springers. |

Your right with the Sigma and 1 of the 19's... I'll do that for sure. I'm going to keep the XD45, at least for now and probably add a 1911 to it. I can't do sub-compact, but probably a compact. Other guns I want and will own sometime soon is a Beretta M9A1 and maybe one of those Walthers, been looking at those also. I'm going to look at that Springfield Mil-Spec Friday and will probably come home with it but I'm anxious to see what else they have also, want to check out the STI stuff. I did enjoy shooting the XD45 today, its shooting smoother and very accurate. |

THIS is YOUR collection, not ours...whatever guns you want to keep, keep em; imo, there is hardly anything on that list that you "should" sell––they all are quality, and i assume, reliable, working firearms; therefore, why sell?
|
| i hear yea on the selling thing but the sigma just sits there. my rationality for keeping it is maybe my wife can learn to use it or just a backup in the cabinet but hell, the trigger's too hard for the wife to pull and I'd much rather her grab the 19 or something. Other than that, not much to sell. I don't really need two 19's and wouldn't mind replacing one of the 19s with the Beretta, but hell, if money isn't super tight, what's the point right? |
| You know guys, I think I've talked myself into an HK in a .45; so either the HK45c or the USP compact. I've been spending hours researching and looking and I'm just not feeling a 1911. I will, however, handle a 1911, an HK, a Sig and see what feels good so maybe my decision will change but I'm really leaning towards an HK. |
