I just purchased a Colt 1991A1 with the large "1991A1" rollmark on the side of the slide from an estate sale. The pistol has barely been fired (maybe one box) and I just couldn't pass it up. It is bone stock.

This pistol is a project pistol. I plan on updating a few parts and it will be a basic plinking pistol. The goal is not to turn this gun into a Yost/Ed Brown type custom pistol. The goal is to learn about the gun, have fun, and update some basic parts.

The first thing I plan on doing is replacing the plastic trigger and the plastic mainspring housing. I would like to get a nice three hole matte blue trigger. As for the mainspring housing, I am looking for a flat mainspring housing with lanyard loop.

Another major thing I want to do is purchase a spring kit and replace all the springs. Maybe change the recoil spring to an 18.5lb spring.

Can anyone help me with what type of spring kit I should use? I have heard of Wolfe and a few others. Any other suggestions?

Get a Wolff recoil spring replacement, it will come with a new FP spring also. No need to replace the others, especially since, as you say, it's almost new. Honestly, I seriously doubt you need to replace ANY spring because springs weaken while in use, not at rest and you need to run 3000-5000 rounds before replacement is needed. Run the gun before you start replacing parts, use that as a  baseline for what you do from there.

Be glad you decided not to go full custom.  It is very easy to take a 1991 just like the one you describe finding (I got mine for $400), and turn it into this...

Of course the black gun in this picture started as a Springfield WWII...

I figure there's maybe $900 in guns there and easily $3700 in gunsmithing...  You will succumb to the 1911 virus!!

The chromed Colt was all done by EGW.  They are a real pleasure to work with and the quality of the work is TOP NOTCH!  The Springfield was done 100% by the Springfield Custom Shop.  It started as a WWII and went in for the full Pro Package.  It is basically a Springfield Professional without the CRG prefix on the serial number.
