OK, I used to be a big revolver fan; my wheelgun arsenal currently includes the following:
Old Model (made in the 50's) Ruger Single Six (no transfer bar) Old Model Ruger Blackhawk (no transfer bar) Old Model 3" Vaquero in 45 Colt Old Model 4 5/8" Vaquero in 45 Colt Ruger Super Redhawk 9 5/8" in 454 Casull Colt Detective Special I saw 3 used revolvers last night at Scheel's and the wife said she'd get me one for Christmas. Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Magnum 7.5" bbl Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 Magnum with a longer bbl. (jewelled hammer, Jay Scott Faux Pearl Grips and the hideous transfer bar) S&W 586 6" Blue with hand tooled old west style holster The first legal handgun I ever bought was a nickel plated 586 and I was feeling a bit nostalgic when I saw it. it had the Gonaco Alves grips mounted and came with the pachmayr set. The Super Redhawk was the first gun that "spoke to me" when I saw it in a Ruger catalog when I was still in High school...the dark grey beast I have is superior but that all stainless piece really lights my fire. The Super Blackhawk would just be to complete the Ruger "Trifecta" as much as I like the gun, I loathe transfer bars. The Super Redhawk would require a scope and rings, the Super Blackhawk a set of grips, the 586 seems good to go. I have plenty of ammo for either caliber (my only 44 mag at the time is a Desert Eagle). So which one should I pull the trigger on? |

"Hideous transfer bar?" Why would you decry an improvement that allows your six-shooter to really be a six-shooter?
Back to the question at hand. Get the S&W. The 586 is no longer manufactured. In good condition they have continued to appreciate in value. Both Rugers are still in production. IMO the Super Redhawk feels like a lead pipe and you dislike the Super Blackhawk's transfer bar, so there's little to recommend either. |

You haven't got a .357 Magnum. Everyone should have a .357 Magnum. |

I've got three Ruger revolvers, an old model 3 screw, 357 Blackhawk (without the transfer bar update, although I have the parts), a new model 44 mag Super Blackhawk with the transfer bar, and a SP-101 in .357 that I just picked up. I've had the two SA's for over 20 years.
I've also got three S&W revolvers, an old military model 10, a pre model 27 and an airweight model 38 Bodyguard. I list them out because I want you to understand that I like them all equally, each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. And I can shoot them all very well. It's a toss up between the two SA Rugers and the pre 27 which I shoot the best. They're all damn good revolvers. Get the 586. Unless you're dying to have another .44, then get the Super Redhawk. I love my Super Blackhawk, but with your feelings on transfer bars I'd suggest you'd avoid it. |

And a Colt SAA just isn't in the cards anytime soon. I have them on my Vaqueros and they do allow you to safely carry the gun with 6 rounds, even though SASS still makes you load down one. I guess I put them in the same ballpark with that obnoxious warning ruger put on all their guns! I guess to complete the "Ruger Trifecta" I'd want the super blackhawk to be minus the transfer bar like the single six and the blackhawk. This is really about nostalgia, I guess. I'm strongly leaning toward the 586, again...because I owned one in the past and the blue on this one reminds me more of a Python than a Smith. |
