Have a chance to pick up a 4" 686 no dash, and need some help with the value, I am not that familiar with S&W and some research shows prices all over the place.  It's "M" marked, so it's already had the upgrades done back in the day.  Has no box or papers, grips are the originals.

All I got on pics.

Do a search on GunBroker.com of completed auctions where the gun actually sold.  That is what I do

I have the same gun. No M though.

$600-700 gun easy around here. Maybe more and won't go down in value.

Offer $550 cold hard cash and see what happens is what I'd do.

4" with those grips is a $600-650 gun.

$650-750 locally . The 4 inch is more popular and having the grips helps a lot.

Honestly $750 is a little high but if you don't buy it now one just like it will probably cost an extra $100 in another 7-8yrs

Too high by at least $100.  Nice guns but they're not rare by any means.  They are not collectors items and given the numbers built likely never will be.

I paid $750 for a 6" 686-1 last year, but everything is more expensive in the Peoples Democratic Republik of Maryland

A local shyster has one listed for $1,000 because "they normally sell for $1,200" , but I agree with the othes on the $600 range.

So have cash in hand and make an offer of $650ish

Asking prices are nothing more than that ... an ASKING price

Allow me to opine the "no dash" adds some value, perhaps another $75 or so?

While $750 certainly is no steal, it's by no means a rip-off either. If it's 98%+, I would think long & hard on it. But then again, I AM a sucker for Smiths............

Swap these grips on it & it will really speak to your heart, IMO.

Went ahead and picked it up.  Ending up paying probably $50-$75 more than I should have, but the 686 no dash's aren't that easy to find in my area for whatever reason.  She's a classic, and a keeper.  Definitely added to my "not for sale" list.

With a revolver like that you are not paying to much, you're just buying it a little early.

A year or so from now, it'll be a good price.  Buying it now, you at least ensure you get it rather than betting on finding another nice one later - and later is often later enough that you end up paying what you thought was too much on the one you passed up.

No dash versus -1 is meh on a 686. Also, it's a square butt, so I'd recommend different grips, lol.
