Does anyone own or have any experiences with Hi Point hand guns.  I see they are very cheap and come with a lifetime guarantee. Might make a good BUG.

they are cheap.  they jam if you use cheap ammo and not very accurate...  but if you are just looking for something to keep on the night stand JIC  you can do worse

Get a surplus handgun instead. They will be more durable and won't jam. Get a Makarov or CZ 82. Don't buy crap.

This.  There are far better handguns on the market for the same price or not much more.  Hard to find a Mak these days for much under $300, but P-64's and PA-63's can be had for $150 and the CZ 82 for $200 or so.  With a spring change the P-64 makes a great little BUG or pocket pistol, and with a double stack mag the CZ-82 makes a viable, if slightly underpowered, carry gun or nightstand gun.

My experience is opposite that. Mine is a fine shooter, and seldom jams. It is cheap as hell though. The lifetime warranty is reassuring, i imagine someday I will need it. For now though, its been trouble free.

They can be hit or miss as far as dependability goes out of the box. I can tell you though that their CS is great and they will tend to any issue quickly the first time. A well sorted Hi-Point works as well as any other inexpensive gun on the market and I've shot more than than one that will empty a mag into a ragged hole at 10 yds. YMMV.

A friend has one and I would rather throw it at a bad guy than shoot it at one.

Hi Point as your back up gun?  What do you use for your primary a Chauchat?

I would rather have a Type 94 8mm pistol than a Hi Point.

i had one for a long time, great pistol, cheap, never jammed, accurate. i really liked it but eventually i sold it and financed my first glock 17. for 150$ you can afford to form your own opinion and not listen to naysayers who never owned one. i had a JHP45 if that helps.

bottom line is it fills a very narrow niche.

Around here that niche is ~50% crime-related throw-away guns.

And no i am not kidding or exaggerating.

There is a good-sized box full of hi-point .380's at the local sheriff's dept right now with the serial #'s filed off...

If you are buying this handgun with even a thought of using it in a self defensive situation my advice is dont. It would be better if you purchased a well used quality pistol than to buy something like this. There are many good brands out there, this isn't one of them.

Heck, even buy an XD! I am interested in those Bul Cherokee and they are pretty inexpensive. The Israeli military uses them.

i own a hi-point 9mm, the compact one....stop laughing.

they are cheap, got mine for 150 bucks.

i would rate it at 98%+ reliable. my gun, has jammed 4 times out of 300 bullets.  i think i have a flaky magazine, need to do more test firings to be certain. but when ever it jammed, it was always been the 6th or 7 bullet out of a 7 rd magazine. it has never jammed in the first 5 rounds.

fairly accurate...i can hit orange sized objects all day long at 7 yards.

i wont cry if i loose it, and if i destroy it...i mail it back to the manufacture with a note of "shits broke", and they return it repaired with a note that says "shits fixed"

over all its a decent tool.  not as awesome as my glock. but it will get the job done. and if BUG, you mean guns that are stashed around then yep, it could easily fit that bill.

I had a .380 a few years back ($99 shipped from Buds, couldn't pass it up) and the gun just ran, I never took it apart, never cleaned it and I put roughly 400rds through it including some weird Russian .380 (not Wolf or Tula) that wouldn't function in my P3AT but ran just fine in the HP. The gun went bang, was fairly accurate and shot all day long, I only sold because .380 ammo started dissapearing and now that .380 is back I might pick up another one.

Would I take it to a gun fight? No
Would I put my life on it? No
Was it reliable and did it go bang every time? Yes

For a range gun, knock yourself out. For any serious task look for something else, anything else.

You won't find a lot of High-Point love here.

They're cheap pistols, and by most accounts reasonably reliable.

If that's all you can afford they're better than a Jennings or somesuch.

I'd suggest you save up and get a used Glock in 9mm or .40 for $350-$400.

User experience here indicates that the guns are accurate and reliable and yet the hive mind says that they are no good. What is the criteria for a useful firearm?

I am also looking for a HI-Point............and a gallon of gasoline to pour on it and burn it . Check out AIM they might have what you are looking for.

1. Must be dependable

2. Can't be a boat anchor (in size and weight)

3. Use quality materials

3. The front shouldn't fall off

Great customer service is no replacement for out-of-the-box quality, not by a long shot...

If you had such great experience with it, took ammo that your P3AT didn't and according to you was reliable and would go bang every time. Why wouldn't you take it to a gun fight?

Seems a little contradictory to me.

I have other guns that I've trained with, put thousands of rounds through and do trust my life to, I never reached that milestone with the HP.

I HATE Taurus guns, I hate them worse than AIDS. However.... If it came down to a Taurus or a Hi Point, I would run to the Taurus in a heartbeat.

Funny how this topic pops up every other month. Even funnier that my bro-in-law was just given a chromed out 9mm Hi-Point a few days ago  since his bridezilla won't let him buy guns himself. I had a chance to look it over real good and put a couple mags thru it. My opinion:It's accurate. It's ugly and ungainly (think cordless drill ergos). It even works- but for how long? The construction, and materials used tells me that when it does finally decide to fail, it probably won't be an extractor, or random spring. I'm figuring more in the way of frame crackage or slide disenigration. I doubt it'll wear out. It looks more like it'd just unexpectantly break.

You know I can guarantee a turd for life and that it will be a turd for life.  If for some reason it stops being a turd I will make another one.  Hi Point offers a lifetime warranty on a piece of crap because the produce them so cheap they can replace them so easy and no loose money.

Here are the reasons I will never buy a hi point
VERY VERY High slide which makes it hard to get a grip close to the center bore.
Cheaply made material.
LOW magazine capacity out of a pistol that is HUGE and should be capable of the infinite ammo like the movies.
Of the 7 I shot 1 ran without a FTF or FTE.
The accuracy is not good it is only fair.
Trigger feels like crap.
