I really want a Hi Power but I was wondering how close to a real Hi Power are the variois clomes and would a good smith work on them?

FEG makes the best replicas.  The original FEG mimics the MKII exactly.

I have an FEG HP-clone that is 100% G2G.

Beware that not all FEG "Hi-Powers" are 100% clones. There are different variations but all with the same model number. Search this forum, there was a post not too long ago where somebody posted pics to show the differences.

The Israeli military and police used FEG and FN parts interchangeably on theirs if that answers your question.

Is that paint?

The FEGs had truly beautiful bluing.  While I'm sure the reparks on GB are perfectly functional weapons, they look like ass.

I just picked up a FEG clone, $350 plus tax.  In very good condition with two original parked mags.  I think it's actually nicer than the mid-80's browning I owned before.  The blueing is very nice, and the machining inside looks just as clean as late model HP's to me.  Looking forward to shooting it.

Looks like some kind of spray on finish over parkerized. But it is much harder then typical spray paint.

It was such a low price, I was going to get is refinished. But decided to leave it as is after closer inspection.

My daughter's FM has some kind of cheap baking lacquer for a finish, and it's absolute crap. While the FMs shoot great and are very accurate, they are rough as cobs, with lots of milling marks. I'm going to have it parked or something since it's mine now, as she bought herself a Glock 19 a few weeks ago.

Argentine FM's have nasty tar like paint on them.  Good guns, but crude finish.

The FEGs have great, albeit thin blueing.

I must have got a different FM, as the finish on mine is very well done and has held up very well to regular carrying and use, much moreso than my FN. No tool marks, either.
