Does anyone know if there are any .45 high cap magazines greater than 15 rounds that are compatible with a Para Ordnance frame?

Brownells has solutions for you.   I love my Dawson +2 bases on P14.   Actually are +3/+4.    Although a little harder to slap in w/slide closed.

SVI/STI are high cost premium options.    IPSC allows 140/170 mm length mags so they are available

If they are Promag or USA mags they are crappy quality and unreliable.  You can get extensions for the 14rd mags that take it to 18 from Dawson Precision.

What are you planning to take on some zombies? Fourteen rounds of .45 seems plenty enough for to take care of any situation, consider a torso shot will put 95% of even the baddest hombre's on the pavement. But what can 4 more rounds hurt, huh?

Thanks guys for the input.   Decided 9mm no good for competitive shooting so tossing up between .40S&W, 10mm, and .45.  Downside of .45 was the magazine capacity so thought I'd check with the AR15 experts to see if there are hi cap mag options.  Home defence/zombie killing definitely not a consideration (actively discouraged here in New Zealand!), but some of those pins and steel plates can be mighty hard to knock over with a 9mm!

On my SX16-40 limited, I get 19 round in the stock mags with base exstenders (read with the exstended base the mags still passes the 140MM rule).  Also with the extra weight of a SA mag well,  a tunsten guide rod with 22 lb spring, the 40 running MPF of 166 (180 gr, VV n320 5.0 long loaded to 1.180), it has dam near no recoil to speak of (recoils like a auto 22LR pistol).

I don't carry the 18rd mags anywhere, but for bedside comfort they work well.  Let's not forget, handguns are defensive by nature.  They are weak and underpowered and should not allow us to *expect* the bad guy to drop.

Ezyman: only problem I might see with 10mm is recoil.  If you reduce the load to something more controllable, then you basically have an extra long 40 caliber cartrige.

Ah if you can handle the .45 recoil you can handle the 10mm. I personally can not tell the difference in the two.

Maybe it depends on the gun.  For me full power 10mm loads give significantly more muzzle rise.  I have never considered 45ACP to be a tough or big recoiling gun with standard pressure 230gr loads.  To me the 45 feels like a slow push where some 10mm and 40S&W loads are more "snappy".  Of course, perception can't really be debated, so I'll shut up now.

I think both of you are right - a lot depends on the pistol you are using to shoot 10mm.  Out of a glock 20, I find there is more kick than I experience with a glock 21; however, shooting 10mm out of a S&W 1006 (nice heavy stainless beauty) the recoil is very similar to a .45.  Advantage to me of the .45 is cheap commercial ammo, downside is the magazine capacity for competitive shooting.  Reverse is true for 10mm - high capacity but very expensive commercial ammo.  Don't get much time to reload so was considering compromising with the .40 round - cheap to buy and good capacity.
But 10mm really delivers!!

Especially from an SMG!    Which is why the FBI uses MP5s in 10mm.

for IPSC, capacity is everything.  if you take a stock 14 rd mag, and add the dawson baseplate you can stuff 18 rds in there, but it will be a beotch to seat.. good for the mag you load when its your turn at the buzzer, 19 rds in the gun will clear many stages without a reload.  additional mags should run 17 rds so it will seat reliably.  These would be hard to conceal, as the baseplate sticks out an inch beyond the already long grip.  the 20 round mags are available, but are lousy quality.  I have one, if you want to see your rounds nose-dive in the magazine rather than chamber, you can get one too.  The 20 is also too long for the 140mm rule in IPSC.

Thanks everyone for the contributions.  Always a good idea to get the opinions of fellow users before going to the effort and expense of importing bits and pieces from the US.  The Dawson Precision stuff looks excellent and the technical team have been exceptionally helpful.  Again, thanks to all for the advice and please feel free to add any further advice on calibres or competition pistols - except 9mm!!!
