| Recently fired a couple dozen hollowpoints through my 1911a1 and it fed them flawlessly. I had heard on the internet that lots of 45 acp pistols don't feed hollow points very well or at all. Any one have trouble with hollowpoints in their 1911? I would certainly like to dispell this potential myth. |

A properly ramped/throated barrel is a must and good mags and extractor tension. Plus, don't shoot super light bullets that make your OAL too short on your rounds. I'm looking around at the better Self Defense rounds these days to see what's got the nicest, roundest profile so I can buy a bunch (500 rnds) to run through my TRP. |

Keep you feed ramp clean and polished and try 230 gr. Federal Premium Hydra Shok ammo for personal defense. If you don't reload can usually find good practice ammo at AMMOMAN.com and georgia-arms.com I've read that older designs like the Hydra Shok doesn't expand as reliably as newer stuff like the HST (which is cheaper anyway) when shot through clothing and whatnot as the bullet can jam up and act like a FMJ. |

Yep compared to modern HP rounds like the Winchester Ranger bonded loads, the hydra shok is way out dated and out classed. I have never had a jam in any of the many 1911's I have owned or shot thru the years, even with factory mags |

The thing's never jammed but I've not shot alot of hollow points. |

I've only had an issue with some Speer Gold dots in my Springer. Called Springfield, they sent me a shipping label and polished the feed ramp and reamed the barrel. Feed Gold dots no problem now. That's why I love SA. I had a Kimber that I bought that was a POS right out of the gate (needed some ramp work and the extractor tuned) so naturally I call Kimber and they gave me the runaround. Last time I bought a Kimber. I fitted a Wilson BP extractor and polished the feedramp and it was good to go but I was still miffed. I was looking at getting a Wilson or other semi custom but then I figured I like my TRP so much I'll just save up and get a Professional with a rail when I get the change saved up. |

Agree with above posts. Most descent makers of 1911's will feed HP's these days. My Springer Mil Spec has eaten every round I have put through it. I used to carry Gold Dots but in the .45 I have had problems with setback and bullet deformation with the Gold Dot's which really bothered me because I love the way they perform. I know the setback is something all bullets can experience but the GD's have been doing it very easily and when both my step brother and I have had bad bullet deformations with two different 1911's and two different batches of GD's I made the switch to HST's
Still carry Gold Dot in my Glock 19 until I shoot them all up then it will be HST's in my Glock 9mm's as well. |

Any semi auto that will be carried needs to be proven before carrying it.
On my guns they must first go through at least 100-200 fmj's without a failure before I go on to hollowpoints. After that I will start shooting whatever hp's that I want to be carrying. The gun must digest at least 100 of them without fail. I have one Colt that just doesn't like Speer gold dots but will run on just about anything else. It only mis feeds about every 20th round on gold dots but that's enough to rule them out for that gun. With my luck the one out of 20 would come up just when I need it most. |

They also didn't lock on the last round. Wilson Combat mags cleared both of those issues. |

1911's can be sensitive with the OAL, the design of a bullets ogive (shape), and crimp. Modern 1911s are setup with throated barrels for feeding other than ball ammunition. Ammo with good crimps is especially important with a 1911. I would put at least 100 rounds of ammo through the gun with zero malfunctions with wichever ammuntion usedbefore carrying . I have always had good luck with 230gr golddots myself. The prervious posts have good advice.

Any one have trouble with hollowpoints in their 1911? I would certainly like to dispell this potential myth. It's not a myth but is highly over quoted and not entirely true. I've had 6 different 1911s and the only ones that had NO problems eating JHPs was a Taurus PT 1911 and a Colts LW Commander XSE. Both of these 1911s eat whatever I feed them. Now all the other 1911s would feed JHPs once you found ones with the right shape. I haven't had one that won't feed any JHPs but it took some trial and error to get some rounds that would work in some of my guns reliably. Magazines also played a part in what would and wouldn't feed. Some pistols liked Wilson 47D 8 rd mags, some liked CM black stainless 8 rd mags, and one liked Tripp Cobra 8rd mags. My standard mags are Wilson 47Ds and they work well in all the pistols I've had with FMJ ammo but with JHPs it was a combination of mags and ammo that led to reliable feeding of JHPs. |

I would certainly like to dispell this potential myth. Nothing "potential" about it. 1911s normally don't have bbl feed ramps & the HP often hangs on the lip where the frame ramp & chamber mouth meet. This why ramped bbls became so popular. With more modern 1911s, this issue may or may not still be a concern. I don't carry JHP in my 1911s & use FMJ's. Just be sure to test more than one mag before you decide your 1911 is HP friendly, IMO. My .o2 |

I've had 2 1911's, one Ruger and one Para. The Para wouldn't eat any hollow points with any reliability but the Ruger ate everything. I actually liked the Para a little more than the Ruger for its grip, heft, sights and appearance. It shoot 230 FMJ well, just not HP's. For me and my requirements a 1911 is a bit too big for CC, so I went with a smaller 9mm.

The myth that 1911's don't like hollowpoints started in the 1970's
Now if you ever looked at the old 1970's HP designs you might understand why they were problematic. The old Speer "Flying Ashtray" design was the best of the best at the time, and it was really designed for the .45 Colt, not the ACP, so you might understand why they had feed issues back then. In fact the only HP I ever had a problem with was the old Speer loads. Modern 3rd generation HP designs feed just fine, even in my bone stock mil-surps. If you have feed issues, it is usually because the extractor is too tight, not due to the bullet design. |

My Kimber Custom II doesn't like hollow points. FMJ not a problem, but it doesn't seem to like HP at all. Most recently I fired a box of Federal 230 Gr HST through it and it failed at an 8% rate.
Eventually I'll start getting some work done on my Kimber, but it doesn't really matter all that much to me because I'm now carrying a FS M&P9 which works great no matter what I've fed it. |
| I have a TRP and Loaded from Springfield Armory. The TRP eats everything I have tried so far with the factory mags and Wilson 47d mags. The Loaded eats all but 200gr Gold Dots. It will eat all of the others with the factory and Wilson mags. It just does not like the 200 grain Gold Dots for some reason. |
