Is Magtech Guardian 124grain JHP. is it good to go?
I found some at my range/store and bought it. it fed and fired just fine just wondering other people's opinions |

would most agree though that it would be better to carry them than walk around with FMJ? Well, we do know what ball ammo will do, the Magtech stuff is an unknown. True, it may not expand at all and act just like ball ammo Or, it could over expand and not get the penetration needed to hit vitals.... Yes, Im sure every round will ignite when needed, but beyond that, is just a guess.... In my experience with Magtech ammo as a whole, I have never had a bad round, yet... ETA- To answer your question, I would rather take my chances with ball ammo then an untested hollow point.... |

I don't know about gel tests, but I carried it in my .380 and in a .45acp 1911. It was good ammo. The velocity through my chronograph matched almost exactly with the velocity advertised, and it is pretty hot ammo. It fed reliably in two different .380s and it also fed reliably a 3 different .45acp 1911s.
I did see what it did to a dog that was ripping the bottom off of my ex wife's rabbit pen a few years ago. To say devastating is an understatement. It looked like he had a beer can pass through him, front to rear. The dog was about the size of a Lab, looked like a Lab and Chow mix, so it traveled about 16 inches through bone and flesh. It exited and stopped in some dirt behind him. Really on top of the soil and I don't think the impact had anything to do with the mushrooming, since there was meat and stuff inside of it. The dog dropped instantly like he'd been hit by a shovel. The shot was taken at about 35 yards. I had pulled into the yard and he was hanging from the bottom of the pen. I rolled the window on my car down and hollered at him, and he let go and faced me. I shot him from inside the car. I had expected to catch him, since he'd been after the rabbits at least a dozen times and I'd run him off. After calling all the neighbors and nobody would claim him I decided I wouldn't run him off anymore. He'd snapped at me before anyway. |

I recently came across some of this stuff as well. I've been a fan of magtech range ammo, but have never shot guardian before. I suspect that it's a reliable round.
As for expansion and penetration, I found a test of their .380 load. http://mousegunaddict.blogspot.com/2012/04/testing-magtech-guardian-gold-380-auto.html Looks like it's on par with Hornady XTP, which is to say that it's not at the top of the performance curve, but it certainly looks like it's a suitable defense round. |
