What is your level of skill?![]() Be HONEST

I shoot a match at the local gun club called the ACTION match... its similar to IDPA, but not as rigid in some area... for example, you can drop expended mags on the ground... Its a little cheaper too... 10$ per match... and there are uauallly only about 15 guys/gals shooting it so it does not take all day. Round count is anywhere from 190 - 225 with 5 courses of fire... of course round count goes up if you reshoot any of the courses. And the coolest things is, first time shooters at this match shoot free. Since I have been shooting this match I have noticed my skill level going up... plus I have dedicated myself to practice practice practice... Its also great for a little self evaluation and noticing where your weak points are. I love it. |
This is a loose poll. Most of us carry for self defense and train accordingly. Marksmanship however is the portion in question. Can you hit your target more than you miss? The be honest part is for self evaluation and feel free to expand the discussion. Ok Class time to learn from each other. |

I think a real world test of marksmanship is engaging multiple targets, while moving, using cover, and changing mags. That is what competition taught me about my weaknesses. I had been shooting for years, standing in one place, shooting at a target at 7-25 yards... with nothing moving, no cover,... if you are serious about self def shoot a match, any match, and you will find your weaknesses. Weaknesses you didnt even know you had. |

It depends on what gun. I was shooting sharpshooter in IDPA when I started with my Glock 19. Now I'm thinking I need to branch out, and I've spent a couple of months trying to learn the 1911. So far it's not going well. I'm classified Novice in CDP with the 1911. I need to spend more time with it practicing, but I haven't had the time. Hoping to get to a class soon to try and learn something. My skills were good enough for second place in CDP Novice at the IDPA Florida state match, for whatever that is worth. It's been amazing to me how much of a switch it is to change platforms like this. I think that the 1911 has alot of potential, I just need to take the time to learn to extract that potential. |
I was always much much better with a rifle than a pistol. Always, much much. My Glocks are measured by the pattern size, in feet. I am decent with my 1911's, XD's & the Makarov. Wheel guns vary a lot. I shoot my Ruger 454 Casull the best out of all my handguns, no glass. Its the gun I guess. But damn if that sob doesnt hurt like hell to shoot. My wrists feel like they are getting hit with a 2X4 every time I pull the trigger. And I have replaced the grips already! |
Not to mention that fact that CDP times are 7% faster compared to SSP. |
Not always. I've shot the lowest score of the match when I was shooting SSP. Once at a State match, and once at a Regional. I've never run the numbers, but I thought CDP was always slower than SSP/ESP due to the 8+1 vs 10+1. |
I don't know SGB. Most times I've been to a public range I see most everyone resting an elbow on a bench, etc. Seems I'm usually the only one shooting 'freehand' (except for the fed prison trainees, but that's another story). I watched a ccw class (where you have to freehand) there were people bouncing them off the cieling, etc in an indoor range. Scary stuff ![]() |
I would have to agree with you RustyTX. The majority of shooters that I see at the public range are pretty piss poor with many of then unable to hit a man size target at 15 yards. Most of the Officers I worked with when on the PD only managed to "Qualify" at minimum standards. The old saying of Practice makes perfect is flawed. Practice with a good coach makes perfect is more like it. My hats off to the ARFCOM handgunners as I believe that they haved polled themselves honestly and are heads above the average in skill. |

Bullseye style I can run about 90-96% of possible score. (If I'm in practice and warmed up.) I can clear 5 pepper poppers at 10 yards from a low ready in a touch over 4 seconds. I can draw and double tap (hammer? - second shot unsighted) at 21 feet in a touch over 2 seconds, with the first shot hitting a 4 inch circle (most of the time) and the second hitting on the 8.5 x 11 paper. I have bowling pin times, but they vary widely due to "getting lucky" with them leaving the table or them deciding to just fall and lay there. My best times for five bowling pins at 10 yards are in the 6-7 second range and my worst are in the 15 -17 second range. What does this make me? Kent |

I noticed 31 people voted "expert", really? Now when I think of expert, one man comes to mind. I dont know his name but he is the guy who does the trick shooting on OLN. Dude tossed 6 aspirin in the air, got all six... Now that is an expert with a pistol. I guess some of you have lower standards of "experts" |
SEE!!! This why I was long winded! Kent |
That's impressive... and useful if you get attacked by six flying aspirin I ASS-U-mMEd it was in a self-defense context. A 'hit what I'ma shootin at' kinda poll. Either way I'd be no expert (for the record) |
|
I voted marksman... I can usually hit COM from various distnces, while moving, and doing magazine changes fairly rapidly. I did ok in some steel shoots, shooting my 3" XD-9 when the other guys were using tricked out STI raceguns.... they'd shoot about 2.5-3 seconds on the plate rack and I could clean it in about 5. I was also drawing from my IWB holster , not a fancy setup. I figure I could hold my own against the average crook or perp... if I was up against a gunfighter I might be at a small disadvantage. |
Good enough that I wouldnt want me to shoot at me |

Is that good? Watch-Six
