I believe every gun needs ten mags for it, minimum. I have three 1911s, so a little more than 30 mags makes sense to me. All my mags are 7 round flush fitting mags. All my mags have 11 pound Wolff springs, and flat, dimpled followers. Speaking of followers, anybody know where I can get replacement flat dimpled followers? |
I'd love to say that we'll hardly see the day where they go after 7rd mags, but nothing surprises me these days. A more practical answer to this question however, is that we are not dealing with rifle mags. There are guys who have found a 1911 mag or two stuffed with hardball that was laying around in a box since the 1980s, and on a lark they took it to the range to fire it fed and fired flawlessly. Nevertheless, it is suggested that pistol mags get a break and you change the ammo out of them every month or so. Therefore a guy with 6 mags can have a pistol mag and 2 spares and a set of empties to swap out at the end of the month, or a pistol mag with one spare, and 2 sets of empties to swap out. |

Full size: 12 Wilson 47D (I need more!) 2-7 round Springfield's that came with the "Loaded", 1-7 round Kimber that came with the Warrior (I'll never use either of those probably) 1-8 round Devell from "back in the day" as well as probably 6 or 8 -7 rounders of various quality from back when I had my Combat Commander (these are burried somewhere in my "stuff"...........). Officers, I have 2-6 rounders that came with the Micro (won't use) 2-7 round Kimbers I bought for it, as well as one Wilson 7 round compact. Realistically, I would probably carry full size 8 round 47D's for spare mags with the Micro, so I don't need any more small ones. But I do like a flush fitting mag for that gun, any protrusion seems to me to partially defeat it's purpose of being small. |

Carry? One in, 2 extra. For practice/range? 20 or 30 or so, I think... For carry, why two extra? If I find myself in a situation where I'm on my last 7 round mag, having emptied the previous two...well, I am woefully undergunned at that point, and should have planned better. Hopefully backup is on the way, but otherwise...I just jumped into a pool that's too deep for me, and it's time to find a way out. |

11 Springfield factory 7 rd, the one that came with and the 10 I got with the loaded coupon. 5 CMC 8 rd. Shooting star, I think. 2 that I've had since '92, I have no idea who made them. 18 total. I also think I have a couple old GI ones somewhere with all the rest of my leftover Army crap, but I can't swear to that. I like having lots of magazines because I'd rather spend my range time shooting instead of loading magazines. I can load mags while I'm sitting at home watching TV. |
