Is that a 27-2? |
|
I played with one at a local shop/indoor range. Must say the sights are nice, and I suppose there's no reason not to like the extra 2 rounds over my two N-frame .357s (a 27 and 28). But, if you're not going to carry this revolver in a weight-critical situation (long backpacking trip, etc.) I'd really recommend you take a couple of extra weeks searching and find a nice, NIB/near-new steel N-frame. Two reasons: (1) The weight is really welcome at the range and in steady longer-distance shooting for small-to-medium game. (2) Sc frame adds hundreds of $$ to the price. Having said all that, if you truly lust after it, go ahead and buy it, and be sure to post some range pics. Life is full of choices -- this is a fun one! |
It is. I've owned several, but this is the only one I've got now. |

I've shot it.... friend owned one. Owned is the key word, as in past tense. It looks all cool, it's light weight, and the trigger is pretty smooth. After shooting full power loads through it it hurts the damn hand. I'll stick with my Ruger GP-100 and my pre lock S&W Model 66-2 Target. For a .357 Magnum you need a nice heavy gun. If you want something fancy I say get this. Smith & Wesson Model 686SSR

| I like 5" barreled N frame .357s, but I prefer stainless to scandium. I have a pair of 627-5PC, and a 686SSR. The 627 weighs 46 oz. with Pachmayr Presentation grips. I feel this is a nice weight for nasty full power stuff. The 686 weighs 40.6 oz. with the same grips and isn't quite as much fun as the 627. I also have a 360 Kit Gun. It weighs 16 oz. with Pachmayr Decellerator grips. It is down right nasty with full power stuff, but I have found that Decellerators tame it pretty well. |

Rocksarge, I have a TRR8 and love it. It's trigger is so smooth. I personally like the lighter weight of the gun. I've had no problems with the moon clips, but you don't need them in this gun. It only helps in quick reloading time. The spent casings eject just fine without the clips, unlike revolvers chambered for 45acp. I prefer not to use the moonclips, because it can take a while to individually load 8 rounds. I shoot .357 mags through it and I don't think the recoil is bad at all. Felt recoil is definitely worse from my SW 66-3 2.5" barrel. I can recommend the gun to you. I'm enjoying the heck out of mine. |
Nothing wrong with this gun. My personal preference would be an early 70's 27-2 in 5 or 6.5". If you ever want to get rid of it, you will get 100% of your money back out of it as long as you keep is in good condition. |

Any of the earlier full stainless PC 627 models are more desirable than that Scandium version. Spend some time searching for one of these older (slightly) models. You might find one NIB. You'll enjoy shooting one much more for being more controllable with than the newer model. You'll like this gun as much as any 686 if not more for controlled aim with a slightly lighter weight.

There is a sum-a-na-bitch around here who has one of the limited run of 3" 627s that were like what Clint Eastwood had in "Bloodwork". He has a Lew Horton limited run 627 PC. Those are $1000+, if you can even find them. The closest thing you are going to find is probably the "Registered Magnums" M27s these days. http://www.lewhorton.com/regmag.html I gave up looking a while back and bought a <cough> Taurus 608SS4 <cough> and it works like a charm. (I wish it were not ported, but, I like how unobtrusive their safety lock is compared to S&W) I had it machined for moon clips for $80 and a trigger/action job for another $100. ZERO regrets. |
