on a good book on 1911s.  I'm not looking for a pricing guide, but something informative on the intricacies of the gun.  Parts, diagrams, etc...maybe something that explains the mods that can be done...basically a 'manual'-ish type of book, so to speak.  I've poked around the bookstore and online, but haven't found anything as of yet.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, and please don't flame me for being a dumb girlie.

A wealth of information to be gleaned from Mr Yam.

Hallock's .45 Auto Handbook if you can find it, and
The Colt .45 Automatic A Shop Manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen.

The first is basic, the second much more in depth and very well illustrated.  The second book also has a companion book, or Volume II, which is very in depth.

You can get both from Brownells online if you prefer.

If you are really techie then the Kuhnausen Manuals are absolutely top notch...no B.S. no urban legend, just pure unadulterated 1911.  I swear by Jerry's books!

+1

Hobbs turned me on to Kuhnausens .45 shop manual....  I bought two.  More info than I'll ever need to know unless I start building them myself (which would just be plain dangerous)

I've got quite the little 1911 library going and learned a little something different from each of them.

Kuhnhausen's manuals are excellent, but are advanced and highly technical.
Bill Wilson's "The Combat Auto" and "1911 Maintenance Manual" are both good.
"The Gun Digest Book of the 1911" has good pictures and several good articles.
"The Custom Government Model Pistol" has about every modification you can possibly do to one listed.

For basic diagrams and maintenance instructions, Wilson's 1911 Maintenance manual is one of the best. If you want to see more advanced custom work performed, the Wilson Video's are pretty good, too.
