| I have come into possesion of an early Colt Commander that has been re-finished with what I believe to be Gun-Kote or another type of spray-on finish. How can I identify what finish was used and what will be the process for removing it? |

It's almost impossible to positively ID what it is. There are so many of these gun coatings that identifying just which it is is near-impossible. There are usually two ways of getting these coatings off. First, is to try solvents. Try soaking a part in lacquer thinner or Acetone. Try using several different types of paint stripper. (Be sure it won't harm the metal, ESPECIALLY if it's aluminum). One method that always works is to have the finish bead blasted off. You want to use a "finer", less aggressive media, and run the system at lower pressures. Since the coating is going to be considerably softer than steel, the idea is to use a media/pressure that will abrade and remove the coating, but won't attack the metal too fast. Try some solvents and strippers first. |
