What is the story on these? Why have companies begun integrating them into their guns? I don't really like the idea of that mechanism in my carry piece, but I'd like to buy a brand new revolver.
How can I visually tell if the revolver has an integrated lock? |

Some local laws demand new handguns have an internal child lock. Same with a loaded chamber indicator.
The internal locks can be easily bypassed/removed. The S&W revolvers can be fitted with a custom plug that fills the unsightly hole left behind when the lock is completely removed. There are many tales on the internet of internal locks, which were previously disengaged, switching back to engaged. Folks believe it is from the forces of recoil while firing. Good news is that some makers offer their new handguns without the child lock as a special run item. Just gotta keep an eye open for them. Either way, I don't like them on my carry guns. |

S&W revolvers have the lock right above the cylinder release.
Contrary to what many people think, the Ruger LCR's have an internal lock under the grip. For a hunting revolver, it is no big deal unless you are in grizzly territory. For SD, buy one without, or remove it and plug it with "the plug" available on the S&W forum. |

I just ran the thing that is on the outside back in after taking out the internal crapola. I think I may have put a teeny bit of lock tite on it so it holds still. |

| I don't think there is a law anywhere in the country mandating the internal lock. It was a move done by Smith and Wesson when they were bought by Safe-T-Hammer, who manufactured aftermarket internal locks. It probably would have been a good business move if the lock was not designed so the mechanism activates and engages under recoil. I had one lock up on me and will never own a Smith with the lock again. |
