Just picked up a new to me rock island. Brought it home, cleaned lubed re assembled and began to give it the good once over.
All in all, I think I did good, real nice condition, 2 mags, and some pachmeyer grips(although those will go away when the mag well goes on). Anyway, I was cycling some snap caps thru the 2 mags it came with and some of my other 1911 mags and found that only the factory ACT mag and new Wilson mags actuated the last round hold open. Older worn follower Wilson and any McCormick mags don't. Upon further inspection, it looks like the slide stop isn't sticking into the mag well enough and therefore not being contacted by the follower when it comes all the way up. The factory mags seem to have a wider follower, so they contact pretty good. The Wilson mag that didn't work has a little wear at the follower where it contacts the slide stop, and that's why it doesn't hit it. I've swapped slide stops from my other rock, as well as my STI, and it still has the same issue. The suspect slide stop functions correctly in both of the other guns with any mag. At this point, I'm assuming the slide stop isn't the problem, but it will be the cheapest and easiest fix. Does anybody make a slide stop that is a little longer as it sticks into the mag well? Or do I have WAY bigger issues? Thanks in advance for any help. |

I suspect that the problem is not in the slide stop, but in the followers. Replace the followers or the mags that cause problems, and leave the slide stop alone.
If you could somehow find a slide stop that extended farther into the mag well, it would likely cause problems with premature slide lock-back with your other mags. |

Does it appear altered? Like someone took a file to it? Most of the time slide stops are pretty much drop in since the tolerances are not that critical. If it works with some mags but not others it is more likely the mag followers are the problem, but Bubba' may have 'improved' the slide stop. |

Doesn't look altered at all, and it functions fine in every other 1911 I have, just not in this gun.
When I pull off the slide, I can see that it doesn't stick as far into the mag well as any of my other pistols. The followers seem to slip off the slide stop when they come all the way up, or miss it all together as is the case with them mccormic mag. ETA: How bout using a 38 super or 9mm slide stop and fitting it? |
