Recently it seems my variant 1 9mm Compact is having some different behavior.  Used to it seems when the pistol was in double action mode I could not push the safety/decock down into the decock position.  I could only push it into decock mode when the pistol was cocked in single action mode.   In double action mode should I be able to push the safety down into the decock position?

I'll check later & report back. I can't remember if I've ever tried that or not?

If your description is accurate, it is functioning exactly as it should. Perhaps you didn't press hard enough on your previous attempts to lower the decocking lever while the hammer was down?

It's fine.  It was probably dry and that made it hard to push at first.  Quite often when people complain about their decock getting very hard to push all they need to do is put a drop of oil on on the detent plate.  Likely when it was not going down it was dry and took more effort.  After you cleaned and lubed it some oil got in there and that made it easier to push giving you the impression something had changed or broken.
