I have an earlish G19 (bought it in '96).

When I slap in a loaded magazine, the slide releases and the action closes.  Is this normal?

I recently shot a G17 and it did not behave like that.  The magwell was also much tighter... Could that have something to do with it?

My Glock 36 did that a few times....turned out my finger was hitting the release.  Maybe you are doing the same thing without realizing it?  Just a thought...

It happens. Think of it as an undocumented feature

perfectly normal.  I have a G19 and can never get mine to do it but when a friend of mine shoots it he gets it to happen almost every time.  I look at it as a good thing I just wish I could do it.

I heard you can solve that problem by spraying some windex on it.

Seriously, I've never had that problem. Of course, I bought my Glock as a
police trade-in, and I'm sure all the bugs were worked out by then.

It happens sometimes, but don't rely on it.  I am guessing you had the muzzle pointed up when you were inserting the mag.  By slapping it in you caused the slide to move slightly rearward which disengaged the slide stop lever.

Yep- that's it.

I also found this at Glockmiester...

Q: When the slide is locked back and I slam in a full mag, the slide is released - how can I fix that?
A: There is nothing to fix. When you slam a loaded mag into the gun, the gun is usually at a slight angle with the muzzle up. When you slam in the mag, you cause a slight rearward momentum on the slide and release pressure on the slide stop lever, thus allowing the slide stop lever spring to do its job and return the slide stop lever to the lowered position. If you are still unsure about this - try holding the gun level and steady - jam a loaded mag in now - I'll bet the slide doesn't close now.

Thanks for all the replies!
