| OK... you troll patrollers can calm down. this is a legite question. Anyone had experience with a PM40 series Kahr verses a Springfield XD 40 subcompact ? Looking for a comfortable to wear back up piece. AND yes, I know CCW means conceal carry not comfortable carry. |
| Not sure this helps but I had a Kahr CW9. It had mechanical problems but more importantly Kahr customer service was glacially slow in getting my problem fixed. The CW9 was the most comfortable CCW I had ever owned but it was not reliable after the first 2 month trip back to Kahr and it was going to take too long to have Kahr make it right. I bought an XD-40 SubCompact for CCW because of previous experience with the XD line of pistols and Springfield Armory's excellent service. |

Looking for a comfortable to wear back up piece. AND yes, I know CCW means conceal carry not comfortable carry. PM40 lot smaller and liter. It will ride in ur front pocket the springer will not. Both great guns, can't go wrong with either. I would not own a 40 cal in either for me anyways. Love my PM9, it goes bang every time and carry in my front pocket with ease. The PM40 kahr would be a handful to shoot IMO. a very small gun and very lite. If I had to have a 40 cal, over anything else, I would probably go with the spring field as it is heavier and bigger, although I do not like it, therefore more fun and controllable. Just depends what ur looking for. I want a pocket rocket and my PM9 serves me well. 19,250 rOund s thorugh it to prove it to. specs on both. springfield xd cmpact 40 cal. 26 ounces kahr PM40 15.8 ounces length : xd 6.25 inches, PM40 5.35" Height: xd 4.75., pM 4.0 width xd 1.1" Pm40 .90" big differences all around. Kahr has no safety other than a loooooong smooth trigger. xd40 grip safety and trigger safety. |

I don't post often here unless I have something to say. I realize that ou asled about a PM40 but some of my comments can translate to the 40 caliber. I have 40s and recoil is not a problem-I just wanted a 9mm. With that preface I had narrowed my CCW choices down to the Kahr CW9, S&W M&P C, Walther PPS, and Springfield. I bought the Kahr due to the flatness of it compared to the others. I liked the PPS but it was almost $200 more than the Kahr and not readily available. None of the aforementioned guns are a bad choice and you can also throw in the Glock 26. Simply put the KAhr felt best in my hand and was flatter and cheaper by a considerable amount. If I had compared the other guns to the higher-priced P9 I may not have bought the Kahr. I think I would have bought the PPS in a 40 over anything else out ther including a PM Kahr. I have several other pistols (Glocks, Brownings, Beretta) but nothing in this category except for a Browning BDA which is too fat to carry concealed IWB.
After about 300 rounds of the cheapest crappiest ammo I could find I have had no issues at all with the Kahr and I am very happy. I took it right out of the box and shot 200 rounds with it with no hiccups at all. I then stripped it completely and gave it a thorough cleaning and lube. Another 100 rounds of cheap ammo went fine. Cleaned it and lubed it and I feel likeI can trust it. I am still getting used to the trigger but the gun is simple and works as it should. I am a happy owner. I do intend to buy an LCP or a p3AT for the occasion when I want something smaller. Good luck both are good choices-Buy what feels best in your hand. |

I have an XD Compact 45acp and a PM-45. Not exactly the two pistols you mention, but the size ratio is about the same.
A few thoughts... 1: They are not in the same class at all. My XD is easily concealed in an IWB holster under a shirt or jacket. If I need deeper concealment, the PM rides well in Thunderwear or even in a pocket. You could have the PM-40 in your front pants pocket, with your hand on it, and not too many people would see anything but a person with their hands in their pockets. The XD is not small enough for this, unless we are talking a jacket pocket. 2: Recoil does matter. Even though it might not hurt your hand, it takes the muzzle off target, and makes the follow up shot more difficult. Even though we run hard hitting ammo, it's doubtful any of us will fire only once, if our lives were in danger. Where is the second shot going? In BG's chest, or over his shoulder? Recoil matters. 3: Give consideration to how you are going to carry a second mag. My PM has a second mag in a front pants pocket mag holder, and it's 100% invisible in my front left pants pocket. It's with me all day, and I never feel like it's in the way. I can't do that with the XD mag, as it's too clunky for the front pocket. I made a back pocket holder, that can hold a mag and a small light or two mags. It looks like I have a second wallet, and it's not remotely comfortable to sit on. |

This, depends on where you are going to carry it and if you already have a fullsize XD and want to use those mags. I carry a .40 but if you go w/ a PM, I would think about the 9mm, the PM40 is pushing the limit. Bigger difference between the PM9 and the PM40 than the XDc's or the Glock 26 and 27. Just saying......... |

Im not as familiar with the XD but I do know the 40 caliber and the PM pistols.
I have carried an HK USP 40C for years, mostly IWB or in my work bag. I swore by the 40, and when I decided I wanted a concealed 24/7 carry pistol i thought the PM40 was the perfect fit. It only took 30 rounds through the PM40 before I decided I better give the PM9 a chance. The muzzle rise off the 40 was much more than on the USPc due to the size & weight difference. The PM9, on the other hand was dead on. no muzzle rise, and very accurate. That being said, if you are deadset on staying with a 40, i would stick to a larger frame pistol like the XD. However, if you want a small, easy to conceal & carry, i would suggest considering the PM9. It is the first 9mm I have owned, and for my purposes, I am glad to have it. |
| I agree with these guys about getting the PM9 over the PM40.I had an XD9 subcompact and there was no way it would fit in a pants pocket.I sold it to buy my PM9 and have been tickled to death ever since. It is without a doubt the best pocket nine on the planet.I didn't post this to poopoo on the XD i love them as well,i bought one yesterday a .40s&w service model. It is my third one and and hopefully not my last one! If it's concealability you want then go for the Kahr,it will serve you well! |

Will the 9mm go into your left jeans pocket without printing a clear outline ?? i have carreid my PM9 in my jeans front pocket for over 2 years, drink coffee quite often with 2 or 3 state troopers who are harley rider friends of mine. they have never noticed it in my front pocket. and yes it will print some what but in a desantis holster , to me it looks like a wallet. I have stated this many times, we are conscious of it being there, so we feel everyone is looking there, and they just ain't. Ask yourself, how often do you get around people and check out their pants pockets. I know I never do and I carry that way. I think we worry to much about basically nothing about this print stuff. It doesn't print to me any more thanmy lcp in a desantis hoslter in my front pocket.. |

I don't have any 40's, but I have a PM9 and an XD9SC. I'll attach some comparison pics I took just yesterday.
The PM9 shoots very well. The grip angle is the same on both, the mag release and slide release is the same on both. The grip texture is the same, though the PM9 is deffinitely more agressive. This is the reason I own both. The weight difference is astounding. The PM9 sits in my pocket and I'll easily forget it's there. I had it in last night then thought I'd do some dry fire practice and couldn't find my gun. Then realized it was in my pocket lol. Accuracy on both is astounding. Reliability on the XD9SC is astounding. I have about 1,000 through it with no malfunctions AT ALL. I only have 52rds through the PM9 right now but will put another 100 through today. No malfunctions in the first 52 though. -Thomas http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080085_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080086_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080087_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080088_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080089_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080090_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080091_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1912/1161/4778080092_large.jpg |

now u tell me,,,,,which one is really a compact handgun and which one is advertising hype. both great guns, no doubt there but also it is what it is to..
PM9 alltheway for this fella, My range gun is my customized G19, but I always manage to put at leat 50+ rounds down range out of my PM9 every time out, I just enjoy shootingmy PM9 that much. Nice comparison photos, really shows the difference, should put to rest any pocket size arguments also..or should I say "opinions". |
| For the purpose of comparing two like pistols of differing brands this was the most constructive thread I have seen on Arfcom.... Thanks for your input. What I ended up with sure didn't make practical sense at all. Colt Detective Special.....sentimental reasons..... Of the two compaired when I get funds to make a decision it will be the Kahr. Thanks for the photos. |

Oh don't get me wrong, the XD9SC has been GREAT for me. It's accurate, reliable, and with it's safety features, makes it great for self defense. Conceals good in a Comp-Tac MTac for me. The Kahr conceals 10x better though, but I mean, look at my pics. How could it not conceal better?
Then again, I had to send the PM9 in as soon as I bought it because it couldn't hit the broad side of a friggin airplane hanger. 2 1/2 months later I got it back and it was worth it, but the springfield never had a problem. Both have functioned flawlessly though. Between the two guns I have had 0 misfires, 0 FTF, 0 FTE, zero anything. -Thomas |
