What are the good and bad of this 1911 model?

I handled one and was told this was Kimber's basic entry level gun.

Got to handle a Taurus 1911 also.

I have one and think it is a very good value.  I think the fit and finish is very good.  You get a solid feeling pistol with the upgrades that many desire (beavertail, longer trigger, higher sights, larger thumb safety) and it is usually pretty accurate comparitive to other guns in it's price range.  A springfield loaded is in the same ball park and is also a good value.  I hear good things about the Taurus too, but I've never handled one.

The bad is you get the schwarz safety system.

Okay what is that?

And I'm not in the market for a Brazilian gun.

Okay found where the LAPD SWAT found this gun was a good one.

Not sure what that means

try a search, lots of topics on kimber (vs whatever else out there too)

in comparison to a PT1911, well, imo, there is no real comparison; the fit, finish, and overall manf of the kimber is noticible over the taurus

h/w, the PT1911, imo, is a good 1911 for the price and is well worth its $500 tag

i'd recommend kimbers, some models more-so over over a comparable one by SA-my other choice

if you find a kimber custom II (internal extractor, etc) for a good price, it'll be a good gun

these topics might help:

the TLE II is a great kimber imo, exactly like the custom II, only w/ night sights and 30LPI FSC

the schwartz safety is a FP safety disengaged by the grip safety

i've had a problem w. one in mine, but would still recommend kimbers

Taurus is Brazilian. Their customer service however has not been stellar for some time now.

Springfield has a Brazilian affiliation with the Imbel Plant in Brazil as well. Imbel, by they way, made some of the best FAL receivers post Israeli and still does turn out great castings and blanks and guns. And Springfield Armory (the USA company) probably has some of the best customer service in the business.

Don't underestimate what the Brazilians can do. They can make quality and sometimes do. Often as a matter of fact.

The recent history of Kimber bears some watching. Their customer service has not been getting raves lately either. And the incidents of issues has risen lately too.

The basic Custom II in 5" is about the best gun, for the buck, that Kimber makes.

Above that you get diminishing returns, IMO.

I removed the swartz system from mine.

At even price points, I'd take the Kimber every time.

I like my kimber custom II a lot.  Although I changed the sights out for Big Dots.

I disagree, as soon as they got rid of the asinine external extractor quality improved markedly. (but the EE was certainly a low point)

you people and this goddamn fetish with the external extractor... i have an eclipse pro with the EE, and i have put thousands of rounds through it with out a problem...

i've seen more problems with improperly tuned internal extractors on all brands of 1911s than i have with the kimber external extractor...

i'd rather you complain about the fact that you paid custom prices for MIM internals or a plastic MSH!

I've mine by a few years already. It has a very tight fit, good finish, and very good accuracy. That's the only 1911-style I have, but I shot a lot of other models too (I've many friends with the 1911 desease - that I heard may be contagious ). Some of them are gorgeous, but they also go over $2K.
Accuracy-wise, I did not notice any difference from my Custom II.
From a reliability POV, I had a couple of FTF in the first 100 rounds, and then it ran flawlesly after that (shot about 2K rounds with it). I've been told that Kimbers, because of the really tight fit they come out of the line, they need 100/200 rounds of "break in".

Get yourself a Custom II, and a series 70 Ed Brown firing pin, and voila.  Firing pin safety is bypassed, and you got yourself a great gun.
