At the end of the summer, I should have my CCL and have been researching pistol options.  I have a glock 23 that I will probably carry in the winter, but because I am in warm weather, I want something smaller for the days of shorts and a tshirt.  I have been looking at the LCP and LC9.  I want to have the option of either pocket carry or IWB.  The reason I like the LC9 over LCP is due to the thumb safety and larger bullet size. (Ive also looked at the p290, but the reviews dont seem to be too good)  I know everyone has a different opinion, but id like to hear some...

p.s. i did a search with no results, so excuse me if this has been posted before

IMO the deciding factor would be how well a lc9 would fit in the pocket for the kind of attire you're going to wear.

If the lc9 fits, great. If it doesn't you'll have to step down to the lcp.

Not sure why you want a thumb safety, but its your CCW...

With that said the LCP is a great pocket carry gun, I had one for a while and it was very reliable and accurate.  However I have found that I can conceal a G26 in a MTAC holster just as easy with a T-shirt and shorts and still have a real "fighting gun" with a 15rd reload. Not to mention that drawing from a holster is MUCH faster and easier.

I would not go any bigger for pocket carry, I have held the LC9 and it is no where near as small as the LCP when you put it in your pocket.

I had a LC9 as a pocket carry gun, it fit well in my pocket in a leather pocket holster. I also like the thumb safety. But I absolutely HATED the loooonng trigger pull!

Which for me made it very inaccurate. So I sold it.

I wouldn't carry a gun as small as the lcp IWB. If you're going IWB get a mid or full size gun.

I own an LC9- actually 2 of them. Got one for the GF first. She likes it a lot, and shoots it pretty well.
So, I got one for me. After a bit of breaking in, it is a very accurate gun. Good shooter, not a picky eater at all. Reloads, range ammo, 147gr. Hydra Shocks.....no misfeeds, no issues.

In a former life, I dealt with several different shooting incidents. A couple involved kids getting hold of pistols. None ever turned out well. After dealing with several situations, I came to regard the magazine disconnect as a very good feature, for 2 reasons: 1. When at home, a party, etc. you take the mag out of the pistol, and the pistol is now a paperweight. No one will accidentally fire the pistol. 2. You find yourself getting jumped, or overpowered. The pistol comes out, and the control of the pistol is now in serious jeaporady. If you lose the gun, you are going to be on the receiving end. You hit the mag release, and work to control the magazine, letting the gun itself go if need be. It allows you to extend and escape, or to throw the mag, rendering the pistol a paperweight.

As to the safety? It's a double action only, so the safety is less critical than on other pistols, as the trigger pull is long and deliberate. AD's will be few and far between. BUT, when target shooting, and the very real scenario of passing the pistol between 2 or more shooters..... a safety is a very good feature to have. Example: "Son, set the safety before you hand me the pistol." It's basic firearms safety, and most folks share their guns with family/ friends, and it makes good sense.
I chose the LC9 because of these features, and the price was very good.  I also stuck to the 9mm because the 9 is simply more affordable and more readily available.

I was in your same situation and ended up picking up a used LCP for $250. I got my hands on a LC9 and discovered that it's not THAT much smaller than my Glock 19 in terms of the grip length, and that's the only part that really matters as far as printing with my style of dress. The LC9 was also too large for pocket carry for me (34x32 jeans). When the weather got too warm for wearing jackets and hoodies I found myself not carrying and I didn't like that. I wanted something small enough that it would be compatible with any outfit I wear and I would have no excuse to not carry it. I can just stick the LCP in my front pocket and be totally comfortable with it and not have to "dress around the gun".

Basically I went with the LCP because it was the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of size from the Glock 19. I don't wear baggy clothing when it's warm and didn't want to have to be stuck wearing dress shirts and khakis all summer. I'm pleased with my decision and the LCP has proven itself to be extremely reliable over about 300 rounds, albeit horribly uncomfortable to shoot with my defense loads due to sharp recoil.

as a Florida resident, and one of the original 5000 permit recipients, I've been looking for the perfect Florida Carry Gun  for about 20years...everything is a compromise...my compromise is that I chose two... one is off the body, in a JanSport Bag, a G17... other is true pocket carry LCP in a Sam Andrews pocket holster (his shop is in Alachua County)...It is the lightest, smallest, chambered for a .355" bullet I've tried, and so far reliable with acceptable accuracy....I have a low perception of threat... I'm just a kindly old retired school teacher... some former considerations....LW .45 Commander, P35 High Power, SW 457, SW640, SP101, SW442 ,PPK, Beretta 850, Beretta 21,Colt Pocket Lite, P3AT, Wilkinson Sherry, Seecamp 32....

if you are thin, you will more easily conceal IWB than us fat boys....

If the lc9 fits, great. If it doesn't you'll have to step down to the lcp.

Also consider your entire wardrobe. I went with an LCP over a Kahr PM9 because even though I could pocket carry a PM9 in my everyday street clothes, it would not have worked in pocket carry while I wore a suit. I didn't want to IWB since I was using this gun as a BUG.

I own an LCP and love it during the summer time. If you got a Glock19, you CAN carry that in the summer as well with a good holster. The Glock19 is the best "all around" gun. Capacity/size/etc. If you only plan to get one- get the Glock19. 9mm > 380, especially with winter clothes.

Good luck.

I've got the best holster and I've found that it boils down to how you dress more than what the gun's in. With me wearing a light t-shirt my 19 is going to print in it unless I buy one that's too big for me and look like a clown.
