Is there any disadvantages to an aluminum reciever commander. Strength, durability ect. Thanks.
Colt's aluminum frames are hard anodized. I wouldn't anticipate any issues with them unless you plan on putting an insane amount of rounds through it over time. If you do plan on that, then get a steel-framed Combat Commander. Bear in mind that SIGs, Beretta 92s, and other service pistols have aluminum frames and have withstood the abuse of military service and the piss-poor maintenance that goes along with it. I carry a Colt Wiley Clapp Lightweight Commander daily and don't have any concerns about it's long-term reliability.
There is a difference in frame life. But the chances you will shoot it enough to find that life are slim. They are noticeably higher recoiling but much nicer to carry then a steel frame commander. If alloy frame is what you want I say go for it as long as it has a feed ramp insert or a ramped barrel.
The only real negative is with a traditional colt type feed ramp, being aluminum, they might get dinged up by some types of hollow points or steel mag followers. Springfield and most others use a ramped BBL so that is a non issue with them. I think ruger puts a titanium insert in their frame ramp.

If this happens EGW has/had an insert that can be added to the ramp area. |
