I have had Colt alloy framed stainless guns, earlier ones and a XSE. I do not like the frame finish and other features on the current XSE. Sold mine.

I saw a Wilson 4" gun in the store and got excited. It was expensive and had a bull barrel without bushing. I am not that progressive yet.

What is the best L.W. available? I am interested in a Colt of the past, what now compares?

Well . . . here's my 2 cents . . .

About a year ago I purchased a new Smith & Wesson 1911PD -- alloy frame, a "true" Commander slide (4 1/4 inch vs. 4 inch) blue finish.

Been shooting the 1911 for 20 some years now.  Currently have Colts and Springfields (sold the P-O and"others") but this has to be the most perfect 1911 that I have ever owned  !   It's now past the 3,000 round mark with ZERO malfuctions -- mostly standard velocity HP's and ball rounds.

It's my daily "winter" carry pistol.  If I was looking to buy another 1911 today I would look at another S&W first.

Not cheap, but worth every dime that I paid.

I was in the same boat a while ago.
Have had a couple bull bbl guns that didn't show me that much(STI & Springer).
Looked around and could not find a Colt worth taking home, everyone had fit or finish problems right out of the box.
Then I stumbled on to a used Wilson CQB compact 4in slide, bull bbl. with an officers frame(all steel). Very accurate functions well. But still heavy and minus 1 bullet.
Then one day I was in the local gun shop and was checking out a Kimber Pro Tac II with internal extractor, bull bbl., alloy frame and all the bells and whistles. Cut a deal on it.
It is lighter than the CQB, almost as accurate, functions well, carries better for me in an IWB holster. Plus 1 slug.
Was a 70 series type guy all the way until I did the trigger on the Kimber and saw how the FP safety operates, now a non-issue in this gun for me and left in operation.
Just an option YMMV.

Look at the S&W 1911Sc.  The scandium alloy significantly strengthens the frame, and the ones I've shot have been quite accuracte.

Picked up a new S&W 1911SC just before Christmas.

It is one of the nicest 1911s I've seen.

I'm still breaking in my VersaMax II, so I've not carried it yet, but it won't be long.

I tried carrying a full size 1911, and the slide was just a tad too long for me to pull off with IWB carry.
