Let me begin by saying I have a brand new HK USP 45 Tactical in hand and am about 4 weeks into the wait for my CFA supressor paperwork to come back. So...

As I understand it, to maximize the effectiveness of the supressor (or minimize the noise, I guess), I want to use subsonic loads, in order to avoid the hypersonic crack as the bullet exceeds the sound barrier (roughly 1050 Feet/Sec). The supressor does the rest.

A rudimentary search of the google found me a set of ballistics tables from Guns and Ammo. It indicates that basically anything with a bullet of 230 gr. or larger will not reach over 1000 fps. So unlike 9mm or .40, it really doesn't matter what I shoot, because its basically ALL subsonic ammo (less the +p or really tiny bullet loads).

Does this sound right or am I missing something? I'd like to start stockpiling for the next Idaho trip...

the majority of .45ACP ammo is subsonic.

just make sure you run your can wet, it may not be hearing safe dry.

Most heavier .40 and some 124gr and most 147gr 9mm are also subsonic.

A .45 ACP may be Supersonic, but it will never be Hypersonic!

Speed sound varies by the Temperature. At 70° F. it is about 1129 fps.

Hypersonic is 5 times the speed of sound or greater – about 5645 fps @ 70° F.

So only the 185gr and maybe a 200gr on a cold day will go Supersonic and then only hot loadings. (185gr is a common weight for a target load)

I meant supersonic. Hey, it was late...

Although...never say never...if we had more power...

Mmm...5500fps with a 230 gr. projectile...Fun!

Yes, the fireball would extinguish all life within 15 yards of the muzzle including microbes and of course the shooter…

In other words, 10mm.
