Bought my first 1911, springfield trp. Wonderful so far as long as I am using the mags that came with the gun.
I apologize for this as I am sure that it has certainly been asked at least a few times in the last 100 or so years but here goes
What mags work in this gun?
I bought two eight round Kimber blued mags when I got the gun, salesman said " the 1911 is the ar15 of the pistol world, a mag is a mag is a mag"
Well the Kimber mags were a total fail. FTF, FTE
switched back to oem mags and ran like a top??
Is there a list of g2g mags for social work, range type work and just save your money and don't buy these type mags?
Your knowledge is appreciated

I've had nothing but good luck with Wilson 47Ds and Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags. I tend to avoid anything made or supplied by Kimber, but I'm horribly biased against them. If you're made of money then you can't get much better than Tripp Cobras.

Edit: the salesman is an idiot. Glock is the AR of the pistol world, the 1911 is more like the old hot-rod. They can be finicky, cantankerous pistols, but when they work, they're a thing of beauty.

CMC powermags are what I buy if I'm spending $20+

Under $20 I've had great success with novak, mecgar, and ACT

ETA: being used in a TRP

In the same boat as OP was wondering about the oem Springfield mags using the supplied coupon for 12 bucks a pop?

I have had no issues using Sig or any Wilson mags along with the 10 rounders from Chip McCormick.

OP: IMO salesperson wanted to sell you Kimber mags or is just ignorant.  All 1911 mags are not equal.  It's like running Scherer or Promag in Glocks: reliable gun + crap mag = fail.

Wilson, CMC Power Mags, Tripp and Checkmate (branded as Ruger, Sig, etc.) 8rd mags gtg for me.

Only 1911 mag issues I've had were with GI surplus, Kimber stock, Kimber TacPro and ACT/Novac mags.

I run my TRP with Wilson ETMs.

They're expensive, but the have the fat baseplate which plays nice with the magwell.

Checkmates, mine have been 100% but I prefer Chip McCormick 8 rounders.

Brownells branded 7 or 8 rnd mags made by MetalForm work perfectly, and come with Brownells money back guarantee.  That's all I use.

Tripp cobra magazines are the best made IMHO and work flawlessly in my TRP.

Magazines I would use again are:

Tripp 7-rnd and 8-rnd
Colt branded 7-rnd (I believe they are checkmate)
Wilson 47Ds with the Tripp 7-rnd conversion
ACT magazines, with the understanding that they will crack and need to be replaced after about 2k rounds in my experience

I haven't tried them all, so just because it's not there doesn't mean it's terrible. I do find that I'm happier with 7-rnd mags for reliability and also ease of insertion. Most 8-end mags are pushing that tube and spring too far in my opinion.

This and because they are not 7 round mags made into 8 round they are designed as 8 round mags.

Thanks I will get some ordered.
I think Kimber mags were all the 1911 mags they stocked, just more stuff to add to the learned the hard way box-o-stuff.

I use the same magazines that came with my TRP (part # PI6085).  I think these might be made by Metalform.  Anyway I found them online for 20 bucks a pop and ordered up a bunch.  My TRP loves them.

ETA your salesman wanted to sell you something.

I'll never understand people plunking down hundreds of dollars for a firearm and then using cheap magazines in it, only to end up wondering why things don't work the way they're supposed to.

The best magazines are Tripp Engineering Cobra Mags.  At any major match, that's the magazine you'll most commonly see.  They are expensive and worth every penny.

The second best magazine to the Tripp is the Kimber Tac Pro magazines.  These are extremely well made and very easy to maintain, unlike the Tripps, which are impossible to disassemble.  DO NOT  confuse the Kimber Tac Pro mags with their standard magazines, which are pure poop as already mentioned in this thread.

Third best choice are Chip McCormick magazines.  These can easily be upgraded with Tripp followers and springs to give you a top-shelf magazine at a reasonable price.

Eschew all others.

I've had 2 springfields, both ran like tops with the supplied oem 7 rd mags.

For 12 a pop i'd buy at least 4 more of them, then get some wilsons or tripps or cmc powermags.

I looked up top thinking there would be a tacked thread just like this one...
All the info any new 1911 owner needs to know to begin shopping for mags.
Seems like it would be nice tacked but I'm new around here and know so little.

Something to keep in mind is the magazine's design. Magazines for the 1911 vary in feed lip geometry. Some experts say controlled feed, which is what most factory mags attempt to do, and some experts say every 1911 should be capable of push feeding (what Wilson 47Ds do). I was told that push feeding will allow most guns to run reliably most of the time, but all guns will sometime have a hiccup and mag degradation presents itself quicker. Controlled feed mags will work horribly with a gun that isn't tuned correctly, but should run flawless with a gun that is tuned for it. Controlled feed was designed to work with FMJ, and push feed allows for a wider range of bullet geometry.

I'm not a 1911 experts, this is just repeating things I've read that seemingly knowledgeable people agreed on.

I get by just fine with CMC shooting star mags, Power Mags work well as do the mags that came with my DW (checkmate i think).

I use Wilson ETM's you can always find them on sale on wilsons site, brownells just ran a sale on them. And I also use the checkmate mag's those are the two best mags I have used in all my 1911's.

I own half dozen of Tripp's Cobra mags. If I were to get any Wilson mags, it be their ETM's
