| I am currently seeking input on the available compact .45 pistols available. Something the size of a Colt Defender. I am hoping to spend less than a grand but I want a good pistol for plain clothes carry and backup. We are issued Glock .40 and I have the baby glock. It is too wide for comfortable concelaed carry and it is impossible to conceal it under a uniform. I like .45 better anyway and I love the 1911 pistols. Any feedback on a good choice would be great. |

I have a friend with two kimber ultra's. One is an Ultra CDP and one is an RCP. He likes both, and they are both quite accurate. I found it relatively easy to make down zero's at 20 yards with both of them. They've both been quite reliable and very durable. He puts a lot of rounds down range. If cost is no option, a Les Baer Stinger. Dan wesson also makes a bobtail that I've heard very good things about. |

Will you continue to carry the issued Glock on duty, or are you switching to plain-clothes duty? (I wasn't clear from your initial post - sorry.) If you will still be carrying/qualifying with/training with the issued Glock, then I strongly recommend that you choose a Glock (or similar system) for back-up, street-carry, etc. - even though you express a preference for 1911s. One single (or similar) type of operating system is better for a whole host of reasons (training, practice, muscle-memory, reaction under stress, etc.). Some folks may be able to switch between systems and use either equally well, even under extreme stress - I would suggest that those folks are few and far between. Of course, if you can opt for something different than the issue Glock then make them both (all?) 1911-style operating systems. IMHO it is more important that you utilize one system (hopefully the one you shoot the best) than which system you choose. ETA: If you must stay with the Glocks, have you looked at the single-stack G36? |
| If your interested in a HI-cap compact .45 take a look at the Para Warthog. Some have had FTF issues but all issues seem to be cleared up with new mag springs. i replaced my mag springs in mine and all FTF went away. Its now my primary CCW. Im still amazed that it holds 10 rounds with its size. Its smaller, only by a hair, than my XD9 sub compact... |
From your own sig-line: The Glock is a pistol for someone who must carry a sidearm, the 1911 is for someone who likes to The initial post led me to believe (rightly or wrongly) that he may be required to carry his issued Glock on duty. If that is the case, I stand by my suggestions re: commonality of systems/platforms. (You'll notice I also suggested going "all-1911" if that is an option. To be honest, I didn't even notice (as I often don't) what Forum the post was in when I replied - it popped up under "Active Topics," I read it, and I gave a reasoned response. I meant no disrespect for this forum with my post - my apologies for any offense. |
