I'm looking for a .45 pistol to go along with my 1911 Commander, so not looking for another 1911.
I'm really feeling drawn to an older/OOP used pistol, such as the Ruger P97, and if I had to buy today, that would probably be it, but I'm enjoying the exploration process. Main purpose would be recreation/range shooting. Any thoughts you might have would be much appreciated! On the other hand, I know that question is pretty stinkin' broad! TIA ~ |
| Sig Sauer P220 is a nice solid .45acp pistol. You can have it in compact and full size. I am enjoying a Glock 30.3 which I've had for years now. It is about the same size as my favorite pistol, a Glock 19.3. I'm planning to get a Glock 41 as I am enjoying the 9mm version (Glock 34). I always wanted to get a HK USP but stayed away because of the price. Have fun shopping around for a new gun. |

I'm a former 1911 fanboy so I know all too well how a nice 1911 shoots, but a Glock 21 will be about the softest shooting .45 you'll ever lay your hands on. I never liked them because they felt so huge, but I handled a Gen4 in a shop one day and within 3 weeks, I sold a 1911 to buy one. Went to the range a couple weeks back to test out a homemade steel silhouette and brought my 1911's with some lead rounds and my G21 on my hip with some FMJ's for range use. Crazy as it sounds, the Glock made the 1911's feel harsh, and the 1911 I had that day had a beavertail and checkering, full steel, 5" variety. I couldn't believe how fast the Glock came back on target and the practical accuracy from my 1911's (been raised around them) and my G21 (owned just over a year) was nearly identical. Not to mention the aftermarket support for Glocks if you want to start playing around with them. |

Find a police trade in Glocks, Sigs, and assortments of used police trade in 45's have been appearing everywhere as more departments follow the FBI's transition back to 9mm you will see the 40/45's flooding the market with police trade ins.

Again, thanks everyone.
I shot for the first time a Glock 30 today (test fire at my local range), and was very pleasantly surprised, particularly with the ability to stay on target after each shot. Recoil wasn't an issue at all. Stayed on target quite easily from shot to shot. Appreciate all the recommendations. |

Or, for something completely different.... |

I'm as accurate with the Glock 30.3 as I am with my Glock 19.3. Just change out the connector to a 3.5# and you should be GTG. |

| I have shot a lot of rounds out of my Springfield Arm 1911 and it shoots very well. However this is not a handgun that I will take hiking or out in the woods For that I have a G21 that also shoot very well. I consider that Glock pistols, the 'Jeep' of the hand guns, in that they can take a lot of abuse and they keep on working. My other hiking/hunting hand gun is my G20sf but it is not a 45ACP. |

This is what you really want... http://www.tombstonetactical.com/catalog/ruger/new-vaquero-birds-head-revolver-45acp-3.75in-6rd-stainless-talo/ In the back of my mind, Ruger Vaqueros are lurking, I freely admit! Honestly, I was looking for something older...no longer available as new - as mentioned, the Ruger P-97 or other - but there are other factors. Loved the Glock 30...and there are a 2-3 variations of those! Again, enjoying the selection process. |

If I go with Glock, it will most likely be the 30. I already have a 42, a 19 and a 22, and if I add another, my personal preference is smaller rather than larger.
... Going to give the S&W .45 revolvers (which I hadn't even thought about before being mentioned here) a look...but as I have a S&W 686 it may feel a bit redundant for me.., as well as the aforementioned Ruger P-97. All great suggestions though, and I'm appreciating everyone's input very much. |
