I finally decided that my year(s) of carrying in an Uncle Mike's cheap cloth holster needed to come to an end, and after reading a lot of positive reviews, ponied up the money for a Comp-Tac MTAC holster for my Sig P229.

When I got the holster, however, I noticed a problem: although the pistol slides easily in and out of the holster while it's off of my body, I have a really difficult time drawing it when it's on me.

I tried loosening the retention screws, but the top rentention screw seemed to be broken;it would spin freely, neither tightening nor loosening.  I called Comp-Tac and sent the holster in.  No problem, they sent it back.  But it still seems to be broken!

I'm going to call Comp-Tac again tomorrow and see what they have to say, but I'm curious if anyone else has had to deal with this issue.  Or is it just a problem with my body type?  I'm fairly thin (5' 9", 135 lbs), and I'm curious about whether this would influence the tightness or lax-ness of the retention mechanism.

Alternatively, I suppose I could just be drawing it wrong.  Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

If you're wearing it too deep your belt will put pressure on the opening of the kydex part. Raise it up a notch or two.

My only complaint with the M-Tac is that the receivers (for lack of a better term) are very thin walled and look like they could strip out or cross thread very easily. The thread on the screws is very very fine so it takes about 15 turns to remove a screw.

Does it seem cross threaded?

I don't think the screw is cross-threaded...when I turn the screw I can feel the washer/bolt/whathaveyou moving underneath the leather backing...and the screw doesn't extract or move out at all, depth-wise.  There's no change in the retention pressure, no matter how much I turn that screw.

As for the belt putting pressure on the mouth of the holster...I tried moving the struts up (and down) in various configurations, and it seemed to make a minimal improvement.  There is still definite "hesitation" when I try to draw the pistol.  It feels like I have to use my index finger to "push off" of the holster by the mag release to draw--but this has the unfortunate effect of placing my trigger finger right in line with the trigger, something I'm trying to avoid if possible.

I'd also like to avoid printing excessively, and for me that generally requires the pistol to ride lower inside the pants.  Does this sound like a hardware issue, a user issue, a combination, or what?

There is your problem, the receiver is not attached to the leather properly. I would send it back an have them repair it.

I agree with this statement, I also think that the threaded bushing inside the leather should not turn, it should be glued or something in there so it doesnt move.

As far as drawing your weapon cleanly ... I also have an MTAC and to draw my 1911 cleanly and consistently, as I acess the weapon, the last 3 fingers on my strong hand grab the butt of the gun, index finger is pointed straight downward (not in the trigger guard) and I then use my thumb to push downward on top of the sweatshield whilst pulling or drawing the pistol.

Not sure if I explained that so you understand it but I tried.  It works for me.

Well, I just got off of the phone with Comp-Tac.  The representative, Josh, was very helpful, and they're going to make me a new holster and send it out, with a pre-pay envelope to send the old holster back.  Hopefully, this fixes the problem once and for all.

Final Update:  when I talked to Comp-Tac, they promised me a new holster and a pre-paid envelope to send the old one back.  I was told the wait would be around 14 days.  Today, only a week after the order was put into the system, I received my new MTAC.  It's a beauty.  Everything functions as it should, and the craftsmanship is great.  I'll be mailing the old holster back to Comp-Tac tomorrow.  Throughout the whole process, the customer service has been very good.  I offer my sincere thanks, and a big +1, to Comp-Tac.
