My Ruger Mark III Hunter magazines doesn't freely drop out.  I notice that after I press the magazine release, the bottom of the magazine will drop down slightly (about an inch) and stop.  I have to tug on it for it to come out completely.  There is slight friction on the magazine but nothing I'm too concerned about.  In comparison, my S&W Model 41 magazines will drop out freely.  I'm thinking that eventually the Ruger magazine and magazine well will wear a bit and break in which will allow the magazines to fall freely.

I too have that issue with my hunter. I think that it could be that mag safety that is catching on it. I have decided to get rid of that and replace it with a MK II bushing. I'll let you know if it works if and when I get ti it. Also I would like to voice my complete disatisfaction with having to do the "mag fix" to get the gun running well. Now that I have done the mag fix I am completely satisfied and the gun eats all the dirty .22 I can afford. WOOT!

What "mag fix" are you talking about? Other than the release issue i haven't experienced any problems...

It is an issue the causes stovepipe type jams. I had 1 or 2 jams per mag until I did the mag fix. The spent casing hits the rear feed lips of the mag instead of hitting the ejector. This caused the casing to be released from the extractor much to early and the pistol would not eject shells without issue. The "mag fix"  has the owner round off the rear feedlipps with a dremel or file. Lots of info on that one out there. Check youtube or google.

I've been reading about this problem around a few firearms forums I hang out at.  I am so glad that I have not experienced this problem with my pistol/magazine combo.  I have 10 magazines that was bought brand new.  I've used them in my Ruger Mark III Hunter (got the pistol and magazines in November '08) and only had problems with bulk ammo.  When I used better quality ammo I've not experience any issues.  I also have another 10 brand new magazine NIB which if I don't sell off in the EE I will use them and see if they are problematic.

I've notice though that on the NIB magazines I have the feed lips are a little polished compared to the older magazines I have.  I am wondering if Ruger is addressing the issues owners are having with the magazines by doing this slight polishing on the newer magazines?

So I decided to sit down and figure out what was going on with my mag release. I'll skip everything interesting and cut to the chase. The pin between the bolt release and safety was 1/16" or so loose. I just used my mallet to tighten it back up and my mags have been releasing extremely smoothly now, if your having problems with mags dropping I would double check that pin!
