My P229 does include a magazine disconnect. It is one of the few things that I do not like about the gun. I believed that all of them had this feature. However, when reading through the SIG interactive armorer guide that I recently came into possession of I saw no mention of a magazine disconnect. It was not listed in the parts diagram (that I could see) and it was not listed in the assembly instructions. So, I am now left with a question. Do all SIGs have a magazine disconnect that was somehow left out of their armorer's instruction guide, or do I have an out of date or somehow special (modded) gun?

No, all SIGs do not have a magazine disconnect, i.e. safety. All mine shoot just fine without the mag inserted.

I believe some states, e.g. Massachusetts, require guns to have mag safeties. Due to your proximity to Massachusetts, I would guess that your gun was sold by a Massachusetts dealer. Just a guess.

You might want to post this on the SIG Forum as well. One of the posters there, Sigfreund, is a walking, talking encyclopedia on SIGs.

Did you buy your 229 used?  Was it a CPO gun?

SIGs do not normally come with a mag disconnect. None of my SIGs have a mag disconnect.  You probably bought on that was originally a special order by police dept that required a mag disconnect.

I did purchase it used (not CPO) from a local dealer.
It works well and I did get a very good deal on it.

Also, I do believe that the dealer told me that it was a police trade-in.

Like you, I do not like mag disconnects.

If you want, a good SIG gunsmith could probably remove the disconnect.  Probably just a simple parts swap.

I don't like disconnects either.  I'd have it removed, not because I think it would ever be a functional issue, but just for general principles.

IIRC, a while back some police department in Delaware wanted Sigs, but also wanted a mag safety.

Sig made some for them.

This might be one of those.

The guys over at sigforum.com could probably tell you more, maybe to include how to properly deactivate it.  It’s probably pretty easy to do considering the safety was added as an afterthought.

Interesting information. It looks like the frame may have been milled to make room for the magazine disconnect so I do not think that I can just "remove" it and still have a functional firearm. However, there is a small spring in there that makes it work. If that were removed the disconnect would remain to the rear and always allow the gun to fire magazine or no magazine. I am mostly just looking for more information though as to WHY this was done in the first place.
