A guy at work asked me why doesn't the bullet " shave lead " when it passes the port ? Hell if I know , it just doesn't . Anybody here got an answer for that one ? |

Why would it? It is travelling in a streight line. By the muzzle the pressure is low enough the bullet cannot obturate any further. There can be lead build up in magnaporting (or almost any other method of using the powder gases to reduce recoil) but it is often from lead vaporized from the base of the bullet. It takes a long time to get much lead. Plain old carbon and other products of combustion in the powder gasses are a lot more likely to produce deposits. |
| I have Magna-Ported Colt Python 357Rem Mag and a S&W Model 41 22LR. I think by the time the bullet has reached the ports it has pretty much conformed to the rifling inside the barrel, so there will be little if any shaving. It has been reported that there is severe leading caused by shaving of the ports, but I haven't noticed it. I'm talking about real Magna-Porting done by the Magna-Port International, and not by a local gunsmith. |
